Syracuse, N.Y. – Syracuse softball (11-14) will travel to Louisville (26-5) to open BIG EAST play against the Cardinals in a three-game series this weekend. The Orange is currently 8-4 in league openers, having most recently defeated St. John's, 11-7, in its first conference game last season.
DUEL IN THE DOME REWIND:
SU recorded its second consecutive sweep in its annual 'Duel in the Dome,' defeating Harvard 6-2 on day one and 5-4 on day two in a 10-inning thriller. With the game tied at 2-2, junior Shirley Daniels led the way with a three-run solo shot in the bottom of the fifth to give SU a 5-2 lead before an insurance run in the sixth clinched the game. In the second matchup, senior Veronica Grant raced to home on a wild pitch to end the game for Syracuse, improving the Orange record to 4-0 inside the Carrier Dome.
SIXTEEN AND COUNTING:
Junior Shirley Daniels is a base stealing machine this year. The rightfielder is leading the team with 16 stolen bases which ranks first in the BIG EAST and 27th nationally. Including Daniels, not a single Orange has been caught this year attempting to steal a base. Together, the team's 28 stolen bases ranks fourth in the league.
BOMBS AWAY:
Eight different Orange batters have belted a total of 21 home runs this season, which ranks fifth among the teams in the BIG EAST and 66th nationally. Senior Veronica Grant leads the team with six, while Jasmine Watson has five, after tallying back-to-back bombs against Utah and Cal. Junior Shirley Daniels has three and sophomore Julie Wambold has two.
After hitting her first collegiate longball against Boston College, freshman Corinne Ozanne notched her second in the first game against Harvard. Senior Ashley Dimon jumped on the board with her first homer of the season against Stanford, followed by freshman Danielle Chitkowski, who cranked her first career home run against Hawaii. Senior Morgan Nandin is the newest addition to the list, following her first homer of the 2013 in the second game against Harvard.
SCOUTING THE CARDINALS:
No. 11 Louisville will enter this weekend's BIG EAST opener with a 26-5 record after upsetting against No. 1 Oklahoma in a 5-1 victory last week in the Louisville Classic. BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week, Carlisa Connell helped the Cards to a 5-7 mark in the tournament, throwing two complete games including a one-run, three-hit performance in the win against the Sooners.
Louisville will also rely on some heavy hitting batters this weekend, led by Katie Keller and Alicja Wolny. Keller is leading the team with a .470 batting average, with 11 doubles, two triples and seven home runs, adding a team-high 28 RBI. Wolny is also batting above .400, having already registered 35 hits, including eight doubles and six home runs in 86 appearances at the plate in 2013
