Chitkowski's Long Ball Leads SU to Win

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman Danielle Chitkowski's solo home run to left field in the bottom of the sixth broke a 3-3 tie game and lead Syracuse (17-24, 5-9) to a 4-3 victory in the weekend series finale against Seton Hall (16-24,4-10) on Sunday afternoon at the SU Softball Stadium.
Senior Stacy Kuwik earned the win for the Orange after pitching a complete game and surrendering only three runs off of six hits, while fanning three.
Seton Hall threatened to break open a scoreless game in the top of the second as Danielle Destasto sent a long hit toward the fence in right field. With two outs already, junior Shirley Daniels leapt into the air for the catch to end the in Pirate at bat.
Leading off for the Orange in the bottom of the third, Daniels ripped a solo shot to centerfield to put U on the board, 1-0. Junior Jasmine Watson followed one batter late with another homer to left to lift Syracuse ahead by two.
With a runner on third in the fourth, the SU defense remained solid in the fourth, as senior Morgan Nandin rolled to the ground to field an SHU ground ball before whipping it over to senior Ashley Dimon to turn a double play.
Senior Veronica Grant added another run with an RBI single up the middle, but Pirates capitalized on an Orange throwing error to make it 3-1 in the fifth. In the next Seton Hall at bat, Meredith Henze hit a two RBI single to tie the game at 3-3.
Chitkowski led off the bottom of the inning crushing a home run to left to give the Orange a 4-3 lead and eventually the win.
Both Daniels and Chitkowski went one-for-two this afternoon with a home run and one RBI. Daniels also added one stolen base, moving her to 26-26 in the category on the year, which leads the BIG EAST.
Next up, Syracuse will travel to Rutgers for a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 24, before traveling to USF for a critical three-game series against the Bulls this weekend.
