Orange Splits Doubleheader at No. 24 USF

TAMPA, FLA. – The Syracuse softball team (20-25) rallied from a tough one-game loss early in the afternoon and returned to defeat No. 24 USF (39-14) in the final game of Saturday's doubleheader at the USF Softball Stadium. The 4-1 victory in game two marks the third win against a ranked opponent fo the Orange this season and improves its BIG EAST record to 8-10.
GAME 1 – No. 24 USF 3, Syracuse 2
USF got on the board early as the Bulls scored two runs off of a single and triple from Kenshyra Jackson and Lee Ann Spivey, respectively. The Orange answered back with a run in the third to cut the deficit in half, as senior Morgan Nandin reached on a fielder's choice, allowing senior Veronica Grant to come home.
Trailing by one at 2-1, the Bulls added another run to make it 3-1 after Spivey scored on a wild pitch. The Syracuse defense held strong though, and senior Stacy Kuwik allowed two hits as the Orange entered the final inning of play still down by two.
After reaching on a fielder's choice, Grant stole second and then advanced to third on a USF throwing error. With junior Jasmine Watson at the plate, Grant capitalized on a wild pitch and came home to make it 3-2, just before Watson was caught looking. With two outs already, freshman Corinne Ozanne flew out to center to end the game.
Nandin led the Orange batters in game one going two-for-three with two RBI. Grant added two runs scored and three stolen bases. Her three steals matches the SU single-game record and is the second time she has notched the mark in her career. The record was originally set by Lisaira Daniels on April 7, 2010 vs. Georgetown.
GAME 2 – Syracuse 4, No. 24 USF 1
Pitching her second complete game, Kuwik earned the win in game two to improve to 14-10 overall, while allowing one run and six hits. Standout Sara Nevins took the loss for the Bulls, dropping to 22-7 on the year after surrendering three earned runs off of five hits in 0.2 innings pitched.
Daniels cracked open a scoreless game with a ground rule double to center in the second inning, driving in sophomore Mary Dombrowski for a 1-0 advantage.
With two outs and two runners on base in the bottom of the second, the Bulls quickly answered back with its second straight single, bringing in a runner to tie the score 1-1.

SU ahead, 2-1. Watson drove in Daniels just one batter later, after smacking her 11th home run of the season to right center. Syracuse racked up three runs off of five hits in the half inning to secure a 4-1 lead and the victory From there, USF couldn't match the SU hitting in the rest of the game, handing the Orange the victory.
Daniels went two-for-three in game two with a run scored and two RBI, while Ozanne tallied three hits in four appearances at the plate.
Syracuse will return to action tomorrow against the Bulls, concluding the weekend series with a game at 11 a.m. at the USF Softball Stadium.
