'Cuse Awards Celebrates Historic Year

Yet another impressive and successful year for Syracuse Athletics was recapped tonight as student-athletes, coaches and administrators celebrated their extraordinary accomplishments at the seventh annual 'Cuse Awards, held at the Goldstein Auditorium in the Schine Student Center.
The men's basketball team won Men's Team of the Year for its run in the NCAA Tournament and reaching the 2013 Final Four in Atlanta. The Orange finished the 2012-13 campaign 30-10 and defeated Marquette, 55-39, to be crowned East Regional champions. One of the season's highlights came in the semifinal of the BIG EAST Tournament when Syracuse defeated archrival, No. 5/5 Georgetown 58-55 in an overtime thriller at Madison Square Garden.
The 19-3 and Final Four field hockey team won Women's Team of the Year. SU knocked off No. 3 Penn State 5-2, to advance to the Final Four for the second time in program history. Syracuse was ranked No. 1 in the NFHCA Coaches poll for three straight weeks and was BIG EAST regular-seasons champions, finishing the season undefeated (6-0) in conference play.
Senior quarterback and captain of the football team Ryan Nassib took home Male Athlete of the Year. He was recently selected in the fourth round in the NFL Draft by the New York Giants and finished his SU career ranked in the top five of every quarterback record list in school history. In 2012, he was named a Pro Football Weekly All-American and was an All-BIG EAST Second Team selection. This past season he led SU to a 38-14 victory against West Virginia in the New Era Pinstripe bowl and set school single-season records for passing yards (3,749), touchdown passed (26), competition (284), passing yards per game (288.4) and total offense (3,891).
The eighth overall selection in the WNBA Draft, Kayla Alexander, won Female Athlete of the Year. During her senior season, she led the team to its fifth-ever NCAA Tournament appearance and was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team. She ranked second in the BIG EAST in points (17.9 ppg.) and third in rebounds (8.7 rpg.).In addition, Alexander's 2.9 blocks per game ranked first in the BIG EAST. She rewrote the SU women's basketball record book, finishing her career ranked first in points (2,024), blocks (350), field goals (736), free throws made (552) and games played (140).
Women's lacrosse's Kayla Treanor and men's soccer's Alex Bono were named the Female and Male Rookies of the Year. Treanor ranks second on the team in points (65) and goals (49) through 17 games this season. She is a two-time BIG EAST Player of the Week. Bono started 20 games in goal for Syracuse and posted 10 shutouts and 79 saves. His 0.85 goals-against average was the fifth-best total in the SU record books.
Three coaches were honored with Coach of the Year awards. Ian McIntyre led the men's soccer squad to a 14-6-1 record and an NCAA Tournament berth, where it advanced to the third round. Jim Boeheim guided the men's basketball team to its fifth Final Four appearance and an overall record of 30-10. Ange Bradley also guided her team to the field hockey Final Four and finished the year with a 19-3 record.
McIntyre's men's soccer squad was name the Most Improved Team. After posting only three wins in 2011, the Orange won 14 games in 2012, advanced to the BIG EAST Tournament and finished the season on a penalty kick shootout in the third round of the NCAA Tournament to No. 6 Georgetown.
Alec Lemon and Michelle Tumolo earned the Performance of the Year awards. Lemon was honored for his performance in the Orange's victory against Missouri. He had 12 catches for a career-high 244 yards and two touchdowns to lead SU to a come-from-behind win against the Tigers. Tumolo sparked Syracuse's comeback in the quarterfinals of the 2012 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Tournament against North Carolina with four goals and an assist. She played a role in each of the Orange's final three goals in the last three minutes of the game, which gave Syracuse a 17-16 win.
Lemon was also part of the Play of the Year winner. His game-winning touchdown reception from Nassib against USF earned the award. The Shot of the Year winner was women's basketball's Brittany Sykes for her steal and half-court buzzer-beater to beat St. John's.
Women's lacrosse's win against Florida in the 2012 national semifinals was the Game of the Year. The Orange posted the second-largest comeback in tournament history to defeat the No. 1-ranked Gators in double-overtime to advance to the national championship game for the first time in school history.
The 2013 Soladay Awards were presented to Iona Holloway (field hockey) and Nassib.
Holloway made numerous key tackles and forced turnovers for the Orange in 2012, while also playing a vital role on both the offensive and defensive penalty corner units. The All-Mideast Region and All-BIG EAST first-teamer also contributed at the offensive end, finishing with five points on two goals and one assist. Holloway, the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year, was named a 2012 Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division I Scholars of Distinction list for having a cumulative GPA of 3.90 or higher through the first semester of the 2012-13 academic year.
After rewriting the record book this season, Nassib was named to the Pro Football Weekly's All-America Team and to the All-BIG EAST Second Team. Nassib holds every major career and single-season passing record (except career TD passes) in SU history. He also had 3,891 yards of total offense in 2012, another Orange season record. Nassib ranks first in completions and pass attempts in the BIG EAST career record book. He was also recognized for his work in the classroom, earning National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete accolades, BIG EAST Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, ESPN Academic All-District Team and BIG EAST All-Academic Team honors.
The nominees for the 2013 Soladay Award included Alyscha Mottershead (women's soccer), Lauren Penney (cross country), Jacqueline Greco (ice hockey), Samantha Hinz (volleyball), Linley Block (women's lacrosse), Morgan Nandin (softball), Erica Belanger (track & field), Natalie Mastracci (rowing), Kayla Alexander (women's basketball), Jonathan Aziz (track & field), Nick Pickard (rowing) and Joe Fazio (men's lacrosse).
Syracuse Chancellor Dr. Nancy Cantor was honored with the Syracuse 8 Courage Award. In addition, the women's rowing team earned the 'Cuse Cares award, and the tennis team was honored for the highest team GPA. The women's lacrosse squad was recognized for earning the highest number of points in the NACDA Cup standings. Nassib, Laura Hahnefeldt (field hockey), Tumolo, Becca Block (women's lacrosse) and Alyssa Murray (women's lacrosse) were honored for earning All-America honors, while Baye Moussa Keita earned the Orange Nation award for support of his fellow student-athletes.
