Thomas Honored for Excellence in Strength and Conditioning

Throughout his four years in Orange, strong safety Shamarko Thomas has been known for his dedication on the field, off the field and in the weight room. Thomas was recognized for his devotion to strength training and conditioning by being honored with an All-American Strength and Conditioning Athlete of the Year award. The accolade is presented by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).
For the 2013 season, the NSCA honored 229 collegiate student-athletes and high school athletes from 98 schools with the award. The NSCA All-American Athlete of the Year Award program is in its 34th year. Syracuse's Dwight Freeney was also honored as an All-American Strength and Conditioning Athlete of the Year.
Thomas, a team co-captain in 2012, ranks sixth in SU history for tackles by a defensive back with 263. He was an All-BIG EAST First Team selection, a 2012 ESPN.com All-BIG EAST selection ad was named an ECAC Division I All-Star this past season. As a senior, he led SU with 88 tackles, including 62 solo, 3.5 for a loss of nine yards and one sack for a loss of six yards. Â
Thomas, who worked out for NFL teams in both the NFL Combine and at Syracuse's Pro Day, Â currently awaits the 2013 NFL Draft. The first round of the 2013 NFL Draft takes place on Thurs., April 25 at 8 p.m. ET, followed by the second and third rounds on Fri., April 26 at 6:30 p.m. ET. Rounds 4-7 will be held Sat., April 27 at 12 p.m. ET. Watch it live on both ESPN and the NFL Network.
