PHILADELPHIA -- The Syracuse men's lacrosse team made its way to the City of Brotherly Love on Thursday, May 23 for the start of championship weekend. The Orange is the tournament's No. 1 seed and will face fourth-seeded Denver at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 25 in the national semifinals. The other semifinal pits the No. 7 seed Duke against unseeded Cornell at 2:30 p.m.
Upon its arrival in Philadelphia, the Orange participated in several events at Lincoln Financial Field to kick off this weekend's festivities. Syracuse players and coaches held a 15-minute media session on the field with reporters prior to attending the NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship Banquet. In addition, select players and Orange head coach John Desko taped various introductions and crowd prompts that will be shown on the stadium's video boards during the games.
Former Syracuse midfielder and current ESPN analyst Paul Carcaterra emceed the banquet, which was held in the stadium's SCA East Club. The four semifinal teams were treated to a buffet dinner. After the meal, featured speaker Vince Papale addressed the crowd. Papale played for the Philadelphia Eagles in the 1970s and was inspiration for the 2006 hit movie "Invincible" starring Mark Wahlberg.
The NCAA also took the opportunity to hand out the Elite 89 Award during the banquet. The honor went to Orange sophomore attackman Kevin Rice for having the highest cumulative GPA of any student-athlete among the four remaining teams.
Syracuse continues its preparation for Denver tomorrow with a full day of events, including an open practice from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. at Lincoln Financial Field.
