Louisville 12, Syracuse 3 | Corinne Ozanne post-game interview
TAMPA, Fla. – After climbing back from a five-run deficit, sixth-seeded Syracuse (23-29) couldn't hold off the No. 3 Louisville (46-10) batters, as the Orange fell to the Cardinals, 12-3 in the quarterfinal round of the BIG EAST Tournament at the USF Softball Stadium.
The loss knocks SU out of the BIG EAST Tournament and evens the series between the two clubs in the event to 2-2, snapping SU's two-game winning streak against the Louisville in the tourney.
The Orange committed two early errors to give the Cardinals a 1-0 advantage. In the next three at bats, Katelyn Mann and Hannah Soles hit a pair of triples, while Hannah Kiyohara added an RBI single to extend the Louisville advantage to 5-0.
With two outs in the top of the third, freshman Corinne Ozanne stepped up to the plate and smacked a home run, driving in pinch runner Emily Thompson. The bomb was the All-BIG EAST Third Team honoree's 11th homer of the season. One batter later, sophomore Julie Wambold followed with a long solo shot to center field to pull the Orange within two runs of the Cardinals advantage, 5-3.
Louisville opened the bottom of the third inning with back-to-back singles and then loaded the bases after Katie Keller was hit by a pitch. Jordan Trimble cleared the bases for the Cards, hitting a grand slam homer to extend the Cardinals advantage to 9-3.
The Cards added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a commanding 12-3 lead, forcing Syracuse into a must-score situation to keep the game alive in the top of the fifth. SU couldn't drive in any runners though, handing Louisville the win.
Ozanne went one-for-two at the plate with two RBI, while sophomore Julie Wambold went one-for-one with the solo blast.
