Freshman Emma Russell scored of a penalty corner with 9:03 left in overtime to give No. 7 Syracuse field hockey a monumental 1-0 victory vs. No. 2 North Carolina on Sept. 1, 2012 at Coyne Stadium. The win was the highest-ranked opponent the Orange had beat since topping No. 1 Maryland in 2008 and ran its home winning streak to 30 games. Leonie Geyer assisted on the winning goal and Leann Stiver made six saves for the shutout.
