FOR STARTERS
- North Carolina State is one of the seven charter members of the ACC, forming the conference on May 8, 1953.
- There are 23 varsity sports teams at NC State.
- NC State teams have won four national championships: two in men's basketball (1974, 1983) and two in women's cross country (1979, 1980). Wolfpack student-athletes have won 29 individual NCAA and AIAW national championships.
- The school's football team has been known as the Wolfpack since 1921, when a disgruntled fan wrote in the school newspaper that the school's football players "acted like a wolfpack," and would never be a winner. The name was adopted by all teams in 1947.

TOP-RANKED ORANGE TAKE DOWN WOLFPACK
In the most recent game between SU and NC State in men's basketball, on Dec. 17, 2011, the Orange ran its record to 4-1 against the Wolfpack. Syracuse took a number-one ranking down to Raleigh and defeated North Carolina State, 88-72. The Syracuse bench outscored the Wolfpack reserves, 46-4, thanks in part to Dion Waiters (22), C.J. Fair (11) and James Southerland (11). The Orange utilized a 23-0 run to take control of the contest in the second half.

Player Interviews

The first men's basketball game between the two schools was on Dec. 4, 1990 at the Carrier Dome, an 86-79 Syracuse victory. Dave Johnson and Billy Owens had huge games for the Orangemen. Johnson had 24 points and 17 rebounds, while Owens had 21 points, 12 boards and six assists. Current SU assistant coach Adrian Autry contributed 16 points, six rebounds and four assists for the victors. NC State was led by Rodney Monroe's 25 points, while Tom Gugliotta had 15 points and 14 rebounds.
SHUMPERT SHOOTS OUT THE LIGHTS IN RALEIGH
The Orangemen and Wolfpack met on the hardwood on Feb. 3, 2001 in Raleigh, with Preston Shumpert leading Syracuse to a 54-53 victory with a game-high 25 points with nine rebounds and included 5-of-11 shooting from 3-point range. Damone Brown added a double-double with 12 points and 12 board, and Allen Griffin had eight assists.Â
ON THE VOLLEYBALL COURT
Though NC State holds a 4-1 lead in the women's volleyball series vs. Syracuse, the Orange has won the most recent meeting, in 1998. On Sept. 5 in the Syracuse Preview Classic, SU swept the Wolfpack, 15-3, 15-7, 15-13.
SU 3-0 IN SEASON OPENERS
Syracuse men's lacrosse opened its season three straight years at NC State from 1978 to 1980, winning all three match-ups. On March 13, 1978, SU won 12-8; on March 13, 1979, SU won 15-10; and on March 11, 1980, SU won 13-12 on its way to its first NCAA Tournament appearance. The Wolfpack no longer has a varsity program.
After spending his freshman year at N.C. State in 1982, 2012 National Lacrosse Hall of Fame inductee Tim Nelson came to Syracuse in 1983 and rewrote the team's record book in just three seasons. Nelson holds the Orange records for most assists in a game (9), season (67 in 1984) and career (187). He also ranks fifth on SU's all-time scoring list with 271 points (84 goals, 187 assists).
Â
Including his rookie season with the Wolfpack, Nelson finished his college career with an NCAA-record 320 points (99 goals, 221 assists). His scoring record has since been broken, but Nelson's 221 career assists still tops the NCAA all-time ledger.
Â
The first three-time winner of the Lt. Col. Jack Turnbull Award (nation's top attackman), Nelson earned first-team All-America honors three times (1983-85) and helped lead Syracuse to its first NCAA championship in 1983.
