
Tommy Powell to Lead Student-Athlete Development

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse University has appointed Tommy Powell as assistant provost for student-athlete development. Powell has a proven background in guiding student-athletes to success in the classroom and in the community. He comes to Syracuse from Iowa State University, where he served as the associate athletic director for academic services since 2008.
While at Iowa State, Powell implemented a standard comprehensive academic support program for all student-athletes. The program helped student-athletes to a higher cumulative GPA than the general student population from 2011 to 2013. Iowa State's 79 percent federal graduation rate in 2010 was the highest in the Big 12 and the seventh-highest among Football Bowl Division schools. In 2009, Iowa State's CHAMPS/Life Skills program earned the Division IA Athletic Directors Association National Program of Excellence Award.
Powell earned his bachelor's degree in psychology in 1992 and his Master's degree in counseling in 1995 from Southeastern Louisiana. Prior to joining the Iowa State Department of Athletics, Powell served as the associate director of the Louisiana State Academic Center for Student-Athletes from 2001 to 2008.
Powell will lead Syracuse's Student-Athlete Academic Development staff, which includes associate director Brady Rourke, assistant directors Joe Fields and Katie Scanlon, academic coordinators Bruce Williams, Oliver Haney, Elena Paolini, Mindy Reger and Mark Trumbo, as well as learning specialist Meghan Murphy.
Rourke is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the Stevenson Educational Center and the development programming to further the academic and personal growth of Syracuse student-athletes. He served as Penn State's academic coordinator for football from 2007 to joining the Orange in February 2013. Rourke also served as the director of the Athletic Director's Leadership Institute, managing the student-athlete leadership development program available to all 31 varsity sports. He earned his bachelor's degree in rehabilitation services from Penn State and a Master's degree in higher education administration.
After playing professional football with the Carolina Panthers, Fields returned to his alma mater in January 2010 as an academic graduate assistant and was promoted to academic coordinator in July 2011. He worked with the Orange football program until March 2012 when he transitioned to serve as the academic coordinator for men's basketball. A four-year SU football letterwinner, Fields earned a bachelor's degree in physical education.
Scanlon joined the Orange as an academic coordinator in December of 2011. She is responsible for providing academic support and monitoring academic progress for student-athletes in men's and women's lacrosse and field hockey. Her duties include overseeing study table, evaluating and assigning tutors and implementing career development plans. Prior to coming to Syracuse, Scanlon held similar positions at the University of New Mexico from 2008 to 2011 and the University of Dayton from 2006 to 2008. She earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from Canisius in 2006. Three years later, in 2009, Scanlon received a Master's degree in higher education administration from the University of Dayton.
Williams joined the student-athlete development department in 2011 as a graduate assistant in academic support. In 2012, Williams was promoted to academic coordinator. In this role, he co-coordinates the objective-based study table, coordinates tutor appointments for the student-athletes, and assists with eligibility procedures and mid-year certification. The former Orange standout returned to his alma mater in 2010 as a strength and conditioning coordinator before shifting to the student-athlete academic development department. In 2011, he served as an assistant director and football coordinator of the Youth Impact Program. A free safety for the Orange, Williams earned three letters and was three-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star. He earned a bachelor's degree in child and family studies in 2009 and completed a Master's degree in instructional design, development and evaluation in 2012.
A three-time BIG EAST All-Academic selection, Haney was appointed as an academic coordinator in the spring of 2013 and is responsible for mentoring and advising student-athletes in development of academic plans and class schedules, co-coordinating the objective-based study table, coordinating tutor appointments for the student-athletes, and assisting with eligibility procedures and mid-year certification. In July 2011, Haney served as an assistant director of the Youth Impact Program, mentoring and tutoring sixth, seventh and eighth grade boys from the Syracuse City School District. After earning his undergraduate degree in physical education, Haney, who played both offensive and defensive line for the Orange from 2007-11, completed a Master's degree in inclusive secondary special education while working as a graduate assistant in the department of student-athlete development.
Paolini joined the Orange as the academic coordinator for women's basketball and tennis in July 2013. She is responsible for providing academic support and monitoring academic progress for women's basketball and tennis student-athletes. Paolini served as an academic and student services inter for football at UCLA from August 2010 to July 2011 and spent the next year at the University of Louisville as an academic and student services graduate assistant for men's basketball and Olympic sports. Paolini graduated from the University of Florida in December 2009 with a bachelor's degree in family youth and community sciences with a minor in education. She earned her Master's degree in sport administration, graduating from Louisville in May 2013.
A member of the Orange rowing team from 2003-06, Reger joined the Orange in July 2013. She is responsible for providing academic support and monitoring academic progress for rowing, volleyball, ice hockey and softball student-athletes. Reger held a similar position at the College of Charleston for nearly two years, serving as an academic advisor for six athletic teams. Reger earned dual bachelor's degrees from the Martin J. Whitman School of Management and the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. She also earned her Master's degree in education from the University of Washington in 2011.
Trumbo serves as an academic coordinator, monitoring academic progress and providing academic support for members of the Orange men's and women's soccer, track & field and cross country squads. He joined the athletics department staff in August 2013. Trumbo comes to Syracuse after serving spending four years at Ball State University where he provided academic support to more than 450 student-athletes. Trumbo earned a bachelor's degree in personal finance and real estate from Clarion University. He received his Master's degree in physical education sports management with a concentration in higher education from Ball State.
Murphy joined Syracuse's Student-Athlete Academic Development staff in May 2013 as the academic learning coordinator. Previously, Murphy served as a case manager at the Center for Community Alternatives (CCA) from 2012-13. She spent the 2010-11 school year as the academic learning coordinator for SU's David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics. Murphy earned her bachelor's degree in women studies from Syracuse in 2003 and her Master's degree in education from Long Island University.
