SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No. 4 Orange (11-1-0, 4-1-0 ACC) defeated Atlantic Coast Conference rival Wake Forest (6-6-0, 2-3-0 ACC) by the score of 3-1 on Friday, Oct. 10 in front of 1,611 fans at the SU Soccer Stadium. Redshirt junior Tyler Hilliard scored a career-high two goals and Chris Nanco added an insurance tally in the 70th minute as the Orange extended its winning streak to seven games.
Both of Hilliard's goals came on free-kick serves by Jordan Murrell, who matched his personal-best with two assists. Murrell now has 19 career helpers, the most ever for an SU defender and tied with Mark DiMonte (1984-87) and Eric Puls (1989-92) for fifth on the team's all-time list.
Murrell and Hilliard hooked up for the first time in the ninth minute of the game. Freshman Julian Buescher was taken down in the offensive third and Murrell sent the ensuing free kick to the back post for Hilliard, who headed the ball into the back of the net for a 1-0 advantage that the Orange carried into halftime.
Two minutes into the second period the Murrell-Hilliard combination struck again. Syracuse was awarded another free kick after a Wake Forest foul and Murrell once again found Hilliard near the back post for his second goal of the night to push the Orange margin to 2-0.
The Orange continued to impose its will on the Demon Deacons following Hilliard's second goal. In the 13 minutes after Hilliard's second-half strike, Syracuse attempted four shots and earned two corners, while Wake Forest managed just one shot, an attempt by Ian Harkes that sailed high at the 57:59 mark.
In the 70th minute, Syracuse added to its advantage. The Orange started a counterattack and Stefanos Stamoulacatos sent a long pass to a streaking Emil Ekblom. Ekblom crossed to Nanco just inside the 18-yard box and Nanco slotted the ball into bottom left corner of the goal to make the score 3-0.
The Demon Deacons were able to generate some offense late in the match and tallied their only goal in the 87th minute.Hank Gauger received a pass from Michael Gamble and chipped a shot over SU goalie Alex Bono to spoil the shutout.
Bono faced just two shots on frame and made one save to pick up his 34 career win. Alec Ferrell recorded seven saves for the Demon Deacons.
The Orange outshot Wake Forest, 13-8, and put 10 of its attempts on goal.
Syracuse travels to Storrs, Conn. for its next match. The Orange takes on former BIG EAST rival UConn at Morrone Stadium on Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m.
