Led by reigning Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston, the Seminoles (6-0, 4-0 ACC) built a 24-6 halftime lead, but the Orange (2-4, 0-2 ACC), in its first game without injured starting quarterback Terrel Hunt, used two different signal callers and held its own against nation's top-ranked team in the second half.
Orange starting quarterback Austin Wilson was 5-of-9 passing for 89 yards and one interception. He left the game in the second half with an injury. Long was 16-of-27 passing for 167 yards, two scores and two interceptions.
Winston threw for 317 yards, going 30-of-36 with three touchdown passes. Tight end Nick O'Leary was his top target. O'Leary had eight receptions for 97 yards and one touchdown, while Rashad Greene and Travis Rudolph caught six passes each. Dalvin Cook amassed 122 yards rushing on 23 carries and scored once.
The Seminoles opened the game with an eight-play, 70-drive that resulted in a 12-yard touchdown run by Mario Pender. After FSU settled for a field goal on its next drive, Long came out to lead the Orange offense, becoming the ninth true freshman in Syracuse history to see action under center. He led SU to three points on his first college series as Cole Murphy hit a 21-yard field goal to bring the score to 10-3 with 12:52 left in the opening half.
On the ensuing possession, Winston found Greene on a crossing route for 44 yards to the Syracuse 5-yard line. The big gain set up a 4-yard TD pass from Winston to Pender to make it 17-3 Seminoles.
After Robert Welsh forced a Pender fumble that was recovered by John Raymon, Syracuse got a 32-yard field goal from Murphy to cut the deficit to 11 points, 17-6, with 7:18 to play in the second quarter.
Winston and FSU answered the score once again. The 2013 Heisman winner hit on all five pass attempts on the Seminoles' next drive, including a 21-yard strike to Nick O'Leary down the seam, to extend the advantage to 24-6 at the half.
After a Winston-to-Jesus Wilson touchdown pass opened the second-half scoring, the Syracuse offense quickly responded with a score of its own as Long found Ishmael on a 22-yard reception for SU's first touchdown of the game, making it 31-13 midway through the third quarter. The scoring strike made Long the first SU true freshman to throw a TD pass in his college debut.
Following a 92-yard 'Noles' scoring drive, Wilson was knocked out of the game, prompting Long to take over and he led a 75-yard scoring march which he capped by finding Ishmael on a crossing route for a 35-yard touchdown with 10:37 remaining to close the game's scoring.
The Orange hits the road next Saturday to face Wake Forest at noon at BB&T Stadium. The game will be televised on the ACC Regional Sports Networks.
