Becomes Third Syracuse Point Guard In As Many Seasons To Earn Distinction
Springfield, Mass. – Syracuse rookie Tyler Ennis is one of 23 finalists for the 2014 Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year Award, announced by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on Monday, Feb. 17.
Named after Hall of Famer and former Boston Celtic Bob Cousy, the annual honor recognizes the top point guards in men's college basketball. The original watch list, which consisted of 80 candidates, was trimmed down to 23 by a nationally based committee.
Of the 23 candidates, Ennis is the only freshmen in the group. Through the first 23 games this season, Ennis ranks fifth in the country with a 3.89 assist-to-turnover ratio. He is also first in the Atlantic Coast Conference with 5.7 assists and 2.17 steals per game to go along with 11.8 points per game, good for fourth on the team. A four-time ACC rookie of the Week, Ennis is also a member of the Wooden Award Midseason Top 25, the Oscar Robertson Trophy and Wayman Tisdale Award midseason watch lists.
"The 23 athletes on this list represent the most committed, determined and skillful point guards in college basketball," said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Basketball Hall of Fame. "We are honored to be recognizing their strengths and are excited to move forward in the selection process."
"The men on this list all have the athletic qualities of an exceptional true point guard in the game of college basketball, the same qualities that made Mr. Cousy an iconic player," said Ken Kaufman, Chair of the Bob Cousy Award and former president of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). "All of these young men are on this list because they deserve to be competing for this well-respected award."
Beginning Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 10 a.m., fans will have the chance to vote for the top point guard in college basketball by going to www.cousyaward.com. Voting will run through Monday, March 10. The current listing of 23 will be narrowed down to five players by early March.
In previous years, Syracuse point guards Michael Carter-Williams (2013) and Scoop Jardine (2012) were Cousy Award finalists. Last season, Carter-Williams was selected as one of the final five players up for the honor.
