SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse tennis team kicks off its Atlantic Coast Conference opener on the road this weekend, taking on nationally-ranked No. 46 NC State on Friday, Feb. 21 at 2:30 p.m. and top-ranked Duke on Sunday, Feb. 23 at 12 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT:
The Orange completed its non-conference schedule last weekend, falling 6-1 at No. 66 Harvard. The juniors dominated the day with Breanna Bachini notching the squads point, while Amanda Rodgers and Komal Safdar earned a win at second doubles.
NEWBORN FIGHTS UNTIL THE END:
In her last three matches, freshman Rhiann Newborn has fought from wire-to-wire, only losing once in a super tiebreaker. In her two unfinished matches, Newborn was ahead 5-2 at Baylor in the tiebreaker when the match ended and won the first set and was tied in the second at Ohio State when the contest came to a close.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION:
NC State: NC State enters the match with a 5-0 record and continues to move up the rankings at No. 46 by the ITA. The Wolfpack have swept three out of five teams this season after defeating College of Charleston 7-0 last weekend. In singles, two-time All-ACC Selection and two-time NCAA Singles Championship selection Joelle Kissell leads NC State. Doubles competition is headed by Elisha Hande and Nicole Martinez.
Duke: The Blue Devils climbed to the top of the polls after winning the ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championship two weeks ago. Senior Hanna Mar leads the undefeated Blue Devils Mar and was recently named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2014 ITA Championship. Marr (42), along with Beatrice Capra (3), Ester Goldfeld (20), Alyssa Smith (96) and Marianne Jodoin (115T) all are ranked nationally in singles. Duke also has three doubles teams ranked in the top 39.
