Matt Abbott, John Galloway, JoJo Marasco to represent United States
BALTIMORE – Former Syracuse lacrosse stars Matt Abbott, John Galloway and JoJo Marasco were named to the U.S. Men's National Lacrosse Team on Wednesday, Feb.6. Team USA will defend the gold medal at the 2014 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championship this July in Denver.
The 30-man U.S. roster was picked from a pool of 51 players that made up the U.S. training team. In addition to Abbott, Galloway and Marasco, former Orange standouts Kevin Drew and Steven Brooks were members of the training team that participated in several exhibitions.
"I can't say enough good things about all of the guys who have been a part of this process," said Team USA coach Richie Meade. "Both the guys who are continuing on and the ones who aren't have been incredible on and off the field since we started working on this process a year and a half ago. You could make a good case for each of them to be on this list, but we are really excited about the group we've put together. We're ready to move from the evaluation phase into the preparation phase as we look ahead to Denver."
At Syracuse, Marasco was a finalist for the Tewaaraton Award (national player of the year) and earned BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year honors in 2013. He set an SU midfield record with 42 assists last season and totaled 66 points (24 goals and 42 assists). Marasco finished his career ninth all-time at SU with 87 career assists.
Like Marasco, Abbott was a finalist for the Tewaaraton Award in his senior season (2009). One of the top defensive middies in Major League Lacrosse (MLL), Abbott led the Orange with 77 grounds balls as a senior and finished his career ninth in school history with 212 career grounders.
Galloway earned two first-team All-America nods and won two national championships with the Orange (2008, 2009). A two-time winner of the Ensign C. Markland Kelly Jr. Award as the nation's top goalie, Galloway set the NCAA records for minutes played (3,776) and most wins (59) during his SU career.
Team USA will reconvene next for training camp in Connecticut June 22-26, concluding with a matchup against a squad of MLL All-Stars in the MLL All-Star Game on June 26 at Harvard University. From there, the team heads to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., for a second training camp July 6-9 before beginning its world title defense in Denver on July 10. Ultimately, 23 of the 30 players will be selected to the active roster for the duration of the World Championship.
