SYRACUSE, N.Y. – After more than a week off due to schedule changes, the Syracuse softball team returns to the field with a road trip to Maryland for a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 2 beginning at 3 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT:
Fighting against a last minute schedule change, Syracuse went on the road and took two-of-three at Georgia Tech to win the series and get above .500 (5-4) in conferece play for the first time this season. In the opener, freshman Sydney O'Hara pitched a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts and senior Shirley Daniels drove in the only run with an RBI double in the sixth. In the opener of Saturday's doubleheader, the Orange overcame a 4-0 defciit behind two-run homers by senior Jasmine Watson and freshman Nicole Lundstrom as O'Hara tossed another complete game in a 5-4 win. Georgia Tech closed out the set with a 15-3 win in the finale.
WATSON MAKES HOME RUN HISTORY:
Senior Jasmine Watson pounded two more homers at Georgia Tech last weekend, bringing her career total to 38 and tying the program record held by Alexis Switenko. Earlier this season at Virginia, Watson recorded the fourth multi-homer game of her career. No other player in Syracuse history has more than three.
O'HARA PITCHES FIFTH SHUTOUT:
For the fifth time in just 12 starts into her career, freshman Sydney O'Hara threw a complete-game shutout, which ranks sixth in a single-season at Syracuse. In addition to her season-opening no-hitter, O'Hara threw one-hitters at Virginia and Georgia Tech and a pair of six-hit shutouts versus Nebraska-Omaha and at Elon. In four of those games, the rookie struck out at least 10 batters, becoming just one of three pitchers in program history to throw at least four shutouts while reaching double-digits in strikeouts.
OZANNE IN THE ZONE:
Sophomore Corinne Ozanne is currently on an 11-game hitting streak, joining just 11 other players at SU to reach that mark. During the span, Ozanne is batting .528 (19-36) with three homers and seven RBIs, while raising her batting average by .145. She also recorded the second multi-homer game of her career, becoming one of seven players at SU to have at least two.
SCOUTING MARYLAND:
Maryland (2-24, 1-5 ACC) snapped a 17-game losing streak in the second game of a doubleheader at North Carolina on March 22 with a 12-11 come-from-behind victory for the team's first ACC win of the season. The Terrapins' only other win came against South Carolina back on Feb. 14 in the Florida Atlantic Tournament. Catcher Shannon Bustillo leads the team at the plate with a .328 batting average and six doubles to go along with 12 runs batted in. In the circle, Brenna Nation has started 13 games this year, posting a 5.62 earned run average and a 0-10 record. Kaitlyn Schmeiser has both of the Terps' wins, sitting 2-8 with a team-high 54 strikeouts in 65.2 innings.
SERIES HISTORY:
Syracuse and Maryland last met in 2010, a Maryland win that gave the Terrapins a 2-1 edge in the all-time series. The teams also, played in back-to-back seasons in 2001 and 2002, with SU coming out on top 3-1 in 2002.
