Sydney O'Hara is just one of three players in the conference to be selected the ACC Player of the Week twice and is the only freshman to hold that distinction
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Freshman Sydney O'Hara got the job done both in the circle and at the plate last week, and was awarded the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week for her efforts on Monday, April 14.
It is the second time O'Hara was named Player of the Week by the ACC, after taking home the honor on March 17, followed by earning the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I National Player of the Week the next day for her versatility. O'Hara is now just one of three players in the conference to be selected the ACC Player of the Week twice and is the only freshman to hold that distinction.
O'Hara led Syracuse to a 5-0 record, including a series sweep at Atlantic Coast Conference rival Pittsburgh, to get back to .500 (18-18) on the season. She batted .500 (9-18) with team bests of seven runs batted in and three doubles to go along with a homer and six runs scored, raising her batting average by .038 to above .300 on the campaign. On the rubber, the righty finished 2-0 with a save, 15 strikeouts, two complete games – with one being a shutout. In both instances that O'Hara went the distance, she yielded two hits or less. For the week, opponents only batted .182 against her.
The Cicero, N.Y. native started off the week by tossing a two-hit shutout in the opener against in-state foe Binghamton and pitched a scoreless three innings in the nightcap to earn the save. It was the rookie's sixth blank sheet of the year, tying her for fourth in a single-season at SU. O'Hara ran her scoreless streak to 11 innings before surrendering a homer in a complete game, one-hitter in the series opener at Pittsburgh to improve to 12-7 this year. Up to that point, O'Hara had allowed just four hits in her previous 15 innings.
Then, O'Hara's bat began to get hot as she recorded a pair of four-hit games in the final two contests of the weekend. The rest of the team combined has two four-hit games this season. In the second tilt against the Panthers, O'Hara hit the two-run, go-ahead homer in the fifth and put the game out of reach with a two-run double the following inning. In the finale, she recorded base-knocks in her first three at-bats to make it seven hits in seven straight at bats. She put the game away once again with a bases-clearing double in the seventh to push SU's lead to six. Her four hits were part of a season-high 18 for the Orange, which was just one shy of the program's single-game record.
On the season, O'Hara is batting .308, with four home runs, 20 RBIs and a team-high 11 doubles, which is tied for 10th in a single-season at SU. She has been even more dominant pitching to opposing batters, compiling a record of 12-7 with a 3.63 earned run average in her debut campaign. O'Hara's six shutouts ranks tied for fourth in one season at SU to go along with six complete game performances where she has surrendered two hits or less, including a no-hitter and a trio of one-hitters. The 122 strikeouts already has O'Hara sitting 10th in the Syracuse career record books.
