GREENSBORO, N.C. – For the second straight season, senior Maddie Kobelt earned a spot on the All-Conference team, this time taking home All-ACC Second Team honors, as announced on Wednesday, April 23.
Kobelt, a 2013 All-BIG EAST recipient, is only the second student-athlete in SU tennis history to be selected to the All-Conferece team multiple times, joining former doubles partner Emily Harman, who was a three-time member of the All-BIG EAST.
The senior co-captain closed out the regular season with 14 wins overall, including six in singles and eight in doubles action. Named the Atlantic Coast Conference's Player of the Week on March 11, Kobelt became the 30th member in program history to join the century club, reaching the 100-win mark with a victory against nationally-ranked No. 114 Audrey Ann Blakely, her second win against a ranked opponent this season.
Recently, Kobelt and doubles partner freshman Valeria Salazar entered the Intercollegiate Tennis Association doubles rankings and climbed 27 spots to No. 45 on Tuesday, April 22. In the past two weeks, the duo upset a pair of top-12 opponents and has won three of their last four matches, with the only loss coming to the fifth-ranked duo from Georgia Tech. On April 11, Kobelt and Salazar took down Clemson's No. 12 Yana Koroleva and Beatrice Gumulya and knocked off No. 10 Quinn Gleason and Britney Sanders from Notre Dame on April 19. The No. 45 ranking is the highest by a Syracuse tandem since Kobelt teamed up with Emily Harman for a spot in the polls at No. 41 on April 12, 2011. That season, Kobelt and Harman achieved the highest-ever ranking by an Orange duo of 32nd on March 29, 2011.
Kobelt and the No. 64 Orange (5-14, 5-9 ACC) will participate in its first Atlantic Coast Conference tournament this week, opening with No. 42 Florida State on Thursday, April 24 at 9 a.m. in Cary, N.C. The winner will take on top-seeded, No. 11 North Carolina on Friday, April 25 at 9 p.m. in the quarterfinals.
