WASHINGTON – Syracuse attackmen Kevin Rice and Randy Staats have been selected as a nominee for the 2014 Tewaaraton Award, presented by Panama Jack. Rice and Staats join 26 other male college lacrosse stars on the official list of candidates released by the Tewaaraton Award Foundation on Friday, April 25.
Â
The Tewaaraton Award has been presented to the national player of the year every season since 2001. This year's award will be handed out on May 29 at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C.
An All-ACC selection, Rice leads the Orange in points (62), assists (33) and ranks second in goals scored (29). He is averaging 6.2 points per contest during Syracuse's current six-game winning streak. In the most recent NCAA statistics, Rice ranks sixth in both points per game and assists per game.
Â
Rice has six six-point games this season, including three eight-point performances. Last night, he tallied three goals and five assists versus Duke to tie the ACC Tournament single-game scoring record. In addition, Rice has scored a goal in 12 straight games and he has at least one point in every game this year.
Â
Staats has 44 points on 24 goals and 20 assists despite missing two games due to injury. He has three five-goal games on the year, plus has displayed a flair for the dramatic. It was Staats' behind-the-back pass to a cutting Billy Ward that resulted in the tying goal with 14.7 seconds left in last night's ACC semifinal win over Duke.
The list of Tewaaraton nominees will be pared down to five finalists whose names will be announced on May 8. Syracuse has had at least one finalist in five of the last six years, including 2008 Tewaaraton winner Mike Leveille.
