
Orange Earns Program-Best No. 2 Seed in NCAA Tournament

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Syracuse has earned a program-best No. 2 seed in the 2014 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Tournament. The Orange earned a first-round bye and will play either Stony Brook or Towson next Sunday at the SU Soccer Stadium. Syracuse posted its best regular-season record in school history of 18-2.
The NCAA Tournament features 26 teams among which the top six seeds receive a first-round bye. America East champion Stony Brook (16-3) and Colonial Athletic Association winner Towson (11-7) will meet in the first round on Friday, May 9 at the SU Soccer Stadium. Syracuse will take on the winner of that game on Sunday, May 11.
The Orange, under the direction of seventh-year head coach Gary Gait, won a program-best 18 games during the regular season and won a share of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) regular-season title in its first year in the league. Syracuse posted eights wins against teams ranked in the top 10 and 12 against opponents ranked in the top 20. The Orange's only two losses this season have been against No. 1 Maryland.
Syracuse and Towson met earlier this season in the Carrier Dome. The Orange scored the final five goals of the game to break a 7-7 tie and record the 12-7 victory. Senior Alyssa Murray led Syracuse with five points on a goal and four assists. The win was the 100th career victory for Gait. The Orange has never faced Stony Brook.
Syracuse is one of seven ACC schools to make the 26-team field. Maryland earned the No. 1 seed, while North Carolina is the No. 4 seed. In addition, Virginia (No. 6 seed) earned a first-round bye, and Boston College (No. 7 seed) and Notre Dame (No. 8 seed) will host first-and second-round games. Duke is the only ACC squad that will go on the road next weekend. The Orange played 14 games against teams in the tournament and posted a 12-2 record in those contests.
The Orange is making its seventh appearance in the NCAA Tournament in the last eight years. Last season Syracuse advanced to the national semifinal for the second consecutive year and the third time in four years where it lost to No. 1 Maryland, 11-10. The Orange has an all-time record of 11-11 in NCAA Tournament play, and has won its last six first-round contests.
