
Soccer Takes Scholar-Athlete Awards

Alex Bono and Maya Pitts are this week’s SU Scholar-Athletes of the Week
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - For the second week in a row, men's and women's soccer have swept the SU Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards. Alex Bono, a Broadcast and Digital Journalism major of the men's team and Maya Pitts, Communications and Rhetorical Studies major of the women's team are the honorees.
Bono and the men's soccer team are riding a four-game winning streak into their match with Colgate tomorrow, September 30 at 7:00 PM at the SU Soccer Stadium. The team is coming off yet another shutout victory led by Bono. The men's squad defeated No. 2 Virginia on Saturday by a narrow, 1-0 margin.
The goal keeper has recorded shutouts in each of the team's eight victories this season. The only goal Bono has allowed this season came in a 1-0 loss against then No. 1 Notre Dame. The Baldwinsville, N.J., native has a 97% save percentage with 34 saves on 74 shots faced in 810 minutes this season. Â Â Â
Pitts and the women's team split their games last week with a 1-0 win over Miami and a 1-0 loss to Pittsburgh. On Saturday, October 4 the women's squad competes in its only game this week against Boston College at 7:00 PM in the SU Soccer Stadium.
The forward's two goals this season ranks her third on the team and she leads SU in assists with three in 2014. Pitts has tested opposing keepers on 65% on her shots in 12 games this season. She's earned starts in eight of those contests. Â
