Orange rushes for 497 yards in 1975 victory over the Cavaliers
Syracuse plays Virginia on Saturday in the first series meeting as conference opponents. The game marks the third time the Orange will visit Scott Stadium in Charlottesville. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – On a breezy November afternoon, the visiting Orange used a powerful rushing attack and stifling defense to shut out Virginia, 37-0, in front of 17,250 fans at Scott Stadium.
The Orange held the Cavaliers to 160 total yards, less than 50 percent of their season average (354.0) and just nine first downs. It also intercepted UVa quarterback Scott Gardner twice.
On the other side of the ball, the Orange racked up 497 yards rushing on 82 carries (6.1 ypc), which stands as the second-best, single-game total in school history, and gained 607 yards of total offense.
Virginia won the toss and elected to receive to start the game. Syracuse forced a three-and-out and the Orange offense immediately took control behind the play of quarterback Jim Donoghue. Donoghue led SU to points on its first two possessions, as Dave Jacobs hit a 19-yard field goal to open the scoring, and Donoghue took it into the end zone himself from 27 yards out for the game's first touchdown.
In the second quarter, tailback Jim Grubbs scored on an 18-yard run to increase the Orange lead to 17-0.
The halftime statistics were heavily slanted in favor of SU. The Orange rushed for 234 yards in the first half, including 104 yards by Donoghue, compared to just one yard on the ground for the Cavaliers. Virginia managed only three first downs and punted five times in the opening two quarters.
In the second half, the Orange ground game continued to flourish. Earl Vaughn, Grubbs, and Bob Mitch each ran for scores as SU rolled up another 257 rushing yards in the final 30 minutes.
Donoghue and Grubbs both recorded 100-yard rushing games. Donoghue totaled a game-high 136 yards on the ground and Grubbs finished with 117.
Larry King and Lindy Hess paced the Orange defense with 11 and 10 tackles, respectively.
SU's 37 points marked a season high.
