Michigan State defeats Louisville, 76-70, in OT in NCAA East Regional Final at the Carrier Dome.
Seventh-seeded Michigan State is head back to the Final Four after defeating No. 4 seed Louisville, 76-70, in overtime in the NCAA Tournament East Regional final on Sunday afternoon in front of 24,404 at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y.
Sunday's attendance, combined with Saturday's semifinals' attendance of 24,453, gave the East Regional a total count of 48,857 going through the Carrier Dome turnstiles.
East Regional Most Outstanding Player Travis Trice led the Spartans with 17 points, while Denzel Valentine added 15 points to go with seven rebounds and a game-high six assists, and Bryn Forbes had 14 points, including 4-of-6 shooting from 3-point range.
Louisville's Wayne Blackshear led all scorers with 28 points, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range and a 12-of-12 effort at the free throw line. Montrezl Harrell scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds, and Terry Rozier had 13 points and eight boards.
Trice was joined on the All-East Region Team by his teammate Valentine and Louisville's Rozier, Harrell and Blackshear.
Forbes scored the Spartans' first five points of overtime, hitting a 3-pointer 25 seconds into the extra period and then making two free throws with 2:27 left to give them a 70-66 lead.
After a pair of Blackshear free throws pulled the Cardinals within two with 1:04 left, Branden Dawson put back a missed 3-pointer with 28 seconds left that extended the Spartan lead to four. Trice then sank two free throws with 10 ticks left to seal it for Michigan State.
Blackshear's 3-pointer with 1:48 left in regulation preceded a pair of free throws for the senior that gave Louisville a 64-63 lead with 1:13 to go, but Marvin Clark bucket with 39 ticks left gave the Spartans a one-point advantage until Mangok Mathiang went 1-of-2 at the free throw line with 4.9 seconds left send the game to overtime.
Michigan State went on a 10-0 run during a 1-of-13 shooting drought by Louisville, capped off by back-to-back 3-pointers from backcourt mates Forbes and Trice to give the Spartans the lead, 57-51, with 7:53 to go.
The Cardinals held the Spartans scoreless over the final 4:07 of the first half, which was part of an 8-2 run that sent them to the locker room with the largest lead of the half by either side, 40-32.
Blackshear and Harrell carried Louisville in the first half with 12 points each, while Trice paced Michigan State with 10 as the teams traded leads eight times and were tied on six occasions.
