Danielle Chitkowski has made a habit of coming through in the final games of the season
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Some things you can just count on in life. Danielle Chitkowski coming through at the plate late in the season is one of them. In the last two seasons, she has enjoyed her best games in the final matchups of the year.
A year ago Danielle Chitkowski caught fire in the final five games of the season. She hit .500 (7-14) with a .533 on-base percentage and a .857 slugging percentage thanks to five of her seven hits being two baggers. The hot streak began in an 8-0 rout of Canisius and was highlighted by a walk-off two-RBI double to defeat Virginia Tech, 5-4.
With the end of the 2015 season near, the junior third baseman is enjoying similar success. Chitkowski carried a seven-game hitting streak into the weekend, extended it to eight and was snapped in game two of the doubleheader against No. 25 Notre Dame.
Once again, her streak began against Canisius. On March 9 the Orange squared off with the Golden Griffins and it was Chitkowski's grand slam that blew a 1-0 game wide open in the third to give Jocelyn Cater a comfortable 5-0 advantage. A week later she struck again, launching a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth to impose the run rule in a 11-0 victory against Niagara.
Those two games highlighted a seven-game streak that included 10 hits in 20 at-bats, 11 runs batted in, six runs scored, two grand slams, four doubles and four walks. The line gives her a .500 batting average, a .583 on-base percentage and a 1.000 slugging percentage in the stretch.
Her hits have come when her team has needed her most as well, with eight hits in 15 at-bats with runners on and five of them resulting in RBI. With runners in scoring position she muscled up for four hits in 11 at-bats (.364) and three of the four hits went for extra bases (a double and two grand slams).
Chitkowski and the Orange will wrap up its series with No. 25 Notre Dame tomorrow at 12:00 p.m., in South Bend, Indiana.
