Rice, Donahue, Mullins, Williams up for national player of the year
WASHINGTON – Syracuse attackmen Kevin Rice, Dylan Donahue, defender Brandon Mullins and faceoff specialist Ben Williams have been selected as nominees for the 2015 Tewaaraton Award.
Â
The quartet joins 21 other male college lacrosse stars on the official list of candidates released by The Tewaaraton Award Foundation on Thursday, April 23.
Â
Syracuse is one of six schools with multiple nominees, and the Orange's four representatives lead the nation. Rice, Donahue, Mullins and Williams each were named to the All-ACC Team yesterday.
Â
Rice has a team-best 30 assists and he is tied with Donahue atop the Orange scoring chart (52 points). Rice has turned in three seven-point performances this season. He leads the ACC and ranks fourth nationally in assists per game (2.73). Rice has scored a goal in 26 consecutive games, the second-longest active streak in the country. Â Â
Â
Donahue leads the Orange in goals (38) and is tied with Rice for the team points lead with 52. Donahue is first in the ACC and fifth nationally in goals per game (3.45). He is tied for second in the conference in points per game (4.73).
Â
Mullins has 11 ground balls on the season and leads the Orange in caused turnovers (13). Mullins routinely covers the opposing team's top offensive player and anchors an Orange defense that ranks second in the ACC in goals-against average (9.11).
Â
Williams is second in the nation in faceoff winning percentage (.693, 176-254) and he leads the NCAA in ground balls per game (10.0). The sophomore has claimed at least 15 draws seven times this year and has won better than 75 percent of his faceoffs five times. He currently ranks third on SU's single-season record list with 110 ground balls.
Â
The list of Tewaaraton nominees will be pared down to five finalists whose names will be announced on May 7. Syracuse has had at least one finalist in five of the last seven years, including 2008 Tewaaraton winner Mike Leveille.
Â
Presented to the national player of the year each season since 2001, this year's award will be handed out on May 28 at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C.
