Senior voted nation's best attackman
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The postseason honors continued to roll in for senior Kevin Rice on Friday, May 22. A day after being named a first-team All-American by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA), Rice won the organization's Lt. Col. Jack Turnbull Award as the nation's top attackman.
Â
Rice is the first Syracuse player since Mike Powell in 2004 to win the award. He joins an impressive group of Orange alums that have earned the honor, including Tim Nelson (1983-85), John Zulberti (1988-89) and all three Powell brothers – Casey (1998), Ryan (2000) and Mike (2001-04).
Â
A Tewaaraton Award finalist as the national player of the year, Rice led the team in points (84) and assists (48) for the second year in a row. He ranks third nationally in assists per game (3.0) and fourth in points per contest (5.25). Rice had nine games of at least five points in 2015 and set a career high with nine (4 goals, 5 assists) in SU's first-round NCAA Tournament win against Marist.
Â
Rice finished his career 12th on the program's all-time scoring list with 222 points and seventh on the team's all-time assists ledger (126).
Â
In addition to Rice, four other players were honored by the USILA with individual awards Friday. Albany's Lyle Thompson won the Lt. Raymond J. Enners Award as the nation's top player. Myles Jones (Duke) was the recipient of the Lt. Donald C. MacLaughlin Jr. Award (most outstanding midfielder), Kyle Bernlohr of Maryland won the Ensign C. Markland Kelly Jr. Award (most outstanding goalie) and Notre Dame's Matt Landis captured the William C. Schmeisser Award (most outstanding defenseman).
Â
Syracuse finished the year with a 13-3 overall record and won its first ACC championship. In addition, the Orange reached the NCAA quarterfinals for the 30th time before losing to Johns Hopkins, 16-15.
