
Men's Lacrosse Awarded No. 2 Seed in NCAA Tournament

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange men's lacrosse team will take on the winner of the play-in game between Northeast Conference champion Bryant and MAAC champion Marist in the first round of the 2015 NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship on Sunday, May 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. The game will be televised live on ESPNU.

Syracuse is making its 35th appearance in the NCAA playoffs. The Orange received the ACC's automatic bid and was rewarded for a 12-2 season with the second seed in this year's 18-team field.

Marist (13-3) will host Bryant (8-9) in one of the tournament's two play-in games Wednesday, May 6. Marist captured its first MAAC title since 2005 with a 16-14 victory yesterday against Quinnipiac. The Red Foxes are led by Joseph Radin who holds the school single-season record with 48 goals in 2015. Goalie Dave Scarcello was voted the tournament's Most Outstanding Player after making 23 saves, including nine against Quinnipiac in the championship game.

Bryant topped St. Joseph's Saturday to win its fourth straight Northeast title and earn its third consecutive NCAA invitation. The Bulldogs boast two 30-goal scorers in Tucker James (33 goals) and Shane Morrell (31 goals). Northeast Tournament MVP Gunnar Waldt has 184 saves in the cage this season and owns a .575 save percentage. Bryant also features faceoff ace Kevin Massa who is the NCAA's career leader in faceoff wins (1,105) and ground balls (744).

This is the ninth time in tournament history Syracuse has received the No. 2 seed. The Orange owns a 15-5 record all-time when serving as the second seed, including winning the 1983, 2002 and 2009 national championships.

Syracuse holds a 65-23 record in NCAA Tournament play. Its .739 tournament winning percentage is the best in NCAA history and its 65 tournament victories are second all-time behind Johns Hopkins (68).

The Orange has 34 previous NCAA invitations to its credit, including 24 straight from 1983-2006. Syracuse advanced to the national semifinals 22 consecutive years from 1983-2004 and has won 11 NCAA championships (1983, 1988-90, 1993, 1995, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2008-09).

Head coach John Desko has directed the Orange to five NCAA titles (2000, 2002, 2004, 2008, 2009). His Orange squads are 31-10 all-time in the NCAA Tournament and Desko owns the highest winning percentage (.756) of any coach in tournament history.

The Orange has never played Marist and is 1-1 all-time against Bryant. The Orange has faced the Bulldogs in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament in each of the past two seasons. Syracuse defeated Bryant, 12-7, on its way to an appearance in the 2013 NCAA title game. The Bulldogs evened the series last year, beating the Orange, 10-9.
