Sophomore won 18-of-20 faceoffs in 9-7 win at Colgate
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sophomore faceoff specialist Ben Williams took home the final ACC Defensive Player of the Week award of the season on Monday, May 4 for his role in Saturday's 9-7 victory at Colgate.
Williams won 90 percent of the game's draws, going 18-for-20 at the X, to help lead Syracuse to a win against the Raiders in the regular-season finale for both teams. It was the 11th time in school history an Orange faceoff specialist posted a single-game winning percentage of .900 (min. 10 attempts).
His play gave SU a huge advantage in time of possession, allowing the Orange to outshoot the Raiders, 43-26. In addition, Williams collected 11 ground balls in the contest to move into second place on the Orange single-season record list with 133.
The honor is the second weekly award for Williams. He was also selected the ACC Defensive Player of the Week on Feb. 23 for his performance against Army West Point.
Notre Dame's Conor Doyle claimed the last ACC Offensive Player of the Week honor. Doyle turned in a three-goal, five-assist performance Saturday in the Irish's 17-8 win over Army West Point.
Syracuse faces the winner of the play-in game between Bryant and Marist in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday, May 10 at the Carrier Dome. Faceoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. on ESPNU.
