Two First Round Picks Highlight 2016 MLL Draft for 'Cuse
1/22/2016 5:29:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
Highlighted by a pair of first round selections, the Syracuse men's lacrosse program saw four of its standouts taken in Friday's Major League Lacrosse College draft.
Redshirt senior attackman Dylan Donahue was taken second overall by the Charlotte Hounds – the highest a Syracuse player was selected since Joel White was taken second in the 2011 draft by Rochester – and redshirt senior defenseman Brandon Mullins was taken ninth overall by the Boston Cannons to lead the way in the first round.
Syracuse's two first-round selections tied Notre Dame for the most in this year's draft and were the 17th and 18th members of the Orange to be selected in the first round all-time, which trails just Virginia (19) for the most of any collegiate program.
Senior goalie Warren Hill was then taken 36th overall by the Atlanta Blaze, before senior midfielder Tim Barber was selected by the Denver Outlaws with the 48th pick to round out Syracuse's selections.
The four selections bring Syracuse's total to 57 selections since the draft began in 2001, which is the most picks by any institution. The 2016 draft also marks the eighth time in 16 drafts that four-or-more Orange have been selected. 'Cuse has also had a player selected in every draft.
Donahue, who enters 2016 coming off Syracuse's first-50 goal season since 1991 last year, brings the nation's second-longest goal-scoring streak into his senior campaign. A local product of West Genesee high school, Donahue was tabbed as a Preseason All-American by Inside Lacrosse.
Mullins, a fellow Preseason All-American, enters his senior season coming off back-to-back All-America selections in 2014 and 2015.
Hill enters his second season at Syracuse after winning two NJCAA Championships at Onondaga Community College and looks to take over the starting job in net after last year's starter Bobby Wardwell graduated.
Barber, another OCC transfer, scored 11 goals and tallied six assists from the midfield in his first season with the Orange last year. Another West Genesee product, Barber showed his flexibility, getting three starts at attack in place of injured Randy Staats, while playing 12 other games at midfield.
The newest crop of professional players will see plenty of familiar faces on their teams this summer, as Syracuse has multiple players on destination squads for Donahue and Hill.
Hill makes the sixth member of the Orange on the Blaze's roster, joining Josh Amidon, Hakeem Lecky, Kevin Rice, Randy Staats and Henry Schoonmaker.
Donahue will be the fourth player on the Hounds roster, joining Kevin Drew, Stephen Keough and Sean Young.
Barber and Mullins are each the only member of the Orange currently on the Outlaws and Cannons respectively.
The four drafted players are eligible to join the professional ranks after their eligibility at Syracuse finishes following this season, which kicks off on Feb. 13Â against Siena. For tickets, visit Cuse.com/tickets or call the Carrier Dome box office at 1-888-DOMETIX.
