Men's Lacrosse Gets First Game Action of 2016
1/30/2016 5:16:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
The 2016 Syracuse men's lacrosse squad got its first opportunity to play someone other than themselves on Saturday when the Orange hosted Hofstra and LeMoyne in scrimmages on the afternoon.
Head coach John Desko rolled through a number of player combinations all across the field as the team prepares for its season opener on Feb. 13. The day was highlighted when Syracuse's offense exploded in their second contest of the afternoon against their local opponent. The Orange defeated the Dolphins 10-1 in just one half after the two squads agreed to shorten their second scrimmages of the day.
"I think we're going to learn a lot from today," Desko said. "We now have an opportunity to take a look at the film and continue to get better."
The defense looked strong for the majority of the day. Senior goalkeeper Warren Hill made five saves in the first quarter, allowing just one goal and reserve netminder Evan Molloy made three saves while keeping the Dolphins off the board in the second.
Jordan Evans led the way offensively for the Orange, netting a pair of goals and recording an assist in the contest. He got things started with just-under seven minutes to go in the first quarter and then set up teammate Matt Lane less than a minute later to give the Orange a 2-0 lead.
Brian Rogers scored an unassisted goal with 3:58 to play in the period for LeMoyne before Syracuse ended the scrimmage scoring eight unanswered goals. Ryan Simmons and Evans ended the first with back-to-back goals, both set up by junior Nick Mariano.
Simmons got the scoring started again in the second, with Devin Shewell providing the helper on that goal. The final-five goals were all scored by different members of the Orange. Lane, Tyler Ford, Tim Barber, Nate Solomon and Brad Voigt scored goals to close out the afternoon, with Solomon providing the lone assist in that span on Voigt's tally.
The faceoff X was once again a spot of advantage for 'Cuse as returning All-American Ben Williams went 5-of-6 on restarts on the day, with Cal Paduda (2-of-4) and Joe DeMarco (3-of-3) proving why Desko has been pleased with his depth at the position behind Williams thus far.
'Cuse began the day by scrimmaging Hofstra, in a contest that was shortened in the fourth quarter. Hill again looked good in net, stopping 10 shots through three quarters of play before Molloy came in for two more saves.
Gale Thorpe got the scoring started for the Orange when he netted the game's first goal nearly seven minutes into play. Evans again played the role of distributor on the play, setting up the redshirt freshman for the score.
Hofstra then netted three-straight goals before Paolo Ciferri scored with 2:03 remaining in the first to pull back within one.
The Orange then went on to control the second frame, netting four goals in the period. Tim Barber scored two of his team-high three goals to start the period, with graduate student Nick Piroli assisting on the first. Piroli then set up Lane's goal later on in the period that tied things at five. Thorpe then finished a pass from Lane with nine seconds remaining in the first half to send the teams back to their benched tied at six.
Sergio Salcido then finished a pass from Evans to knot things again at seven with 12:46 to play in the third. Barber then scored on a man-up opportunity (Syracuse was 2-for-3 on extra-man chances in the game), to go ahead 8-7. However a goal from the Pride with six minutes to play in the third evened things up once again.
The Orange then pulled all of their starters for a 10-minute running time fourth quarter, where Hofstra netted the only goal near the midway point of the final quarter to take the game 9-8.
Syracuse will open its regular season in its 100th year of lacrosse on Saturday, February 13 against Siena. Tickets are available at Cuse.com/Tickets and by calling 1-888-DOMETIX.
