
Bennie, Shafer named Scholar-Athletes of the Week

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Student-athletes Colin Bennie of the men's cross country team and Sierra Shafer of the women's soccer team are this week's Orange Scholar-Athletes of the Week.
Bennie and the men's cross country team stay in-state this week, as they travel to Ithaca for the John Reif Memorial meet on Friday to close out the regular season.
Bennie is a political science major in the College of Arts and Sciences. The junior is an active representative for men's cross country in the Syracuse Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
A native of Princeton, Mass., Bennie was a U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-American in 2015, as well as a College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-American, All-ACC honoree, USTFCCCA All-Academic team member, and an ACC All-Academic team selection.
Bennie was eighth at last year's NCAA championship, helping Syracuse claim the national title in Terre Haute, Ind. This season, Bennie has been a crucial part to the Orange five-man scoring team. He was 14th last weekend at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational, one of the nation's most elite regular season competition.
After earning an ACC victory last Sunday, Shafer and the Orange soccer team travel to Wake Forest for a Thursday night game in Winston-Salem. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
Syracuse then returns for a final home match on Sunday in the friendly confines of the SU Soccer Stadium against North Carolina at 1 p.m.
Shafer is a public relations major in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. The senior is the Vice President of Career Development for the Syracuse Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
A native of Chittenango, N.Y., Shafer is a four-time member of the Syracuse University Athletic Director's Honor Roll.
Shafer is a member of the Syracuse digital media team for athletics. The goalkeeper also spent 18 days studying abroad in Australia over the summer, participating in a three-credit course called 'Australia: Sport, History and Culture.'
