Syracuse Wraps Up Season With Overtime Battle At Boston College

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Coming out of halftime, Boston College led the Syracuse women's soccer team 1-0 but that lead didn't last long into the half. Thirty-four seconds in, Eva Gordon took a breakaway straight to the goal to tie up the game.
The score would stay the same throughout the rest of regulation although both teams had chances for the go-ahead. The Orange pressed in the counter attack but were unable to make the connection to get the game-winner in the cold, rainy conditions in Chestnut Hill.
The Eagles were able to get several dangerous looks with seven second half corner kicks, but goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan and the Orange defense turned away every single one. Brosnan finished the game with 11 saves on the day.
"It was two very different halves," head coach Phil Wheddon said. "I thought in the first half Boston College dominated with a lot of long shots. At halftime we talked about things we needed to do to affect BC and I thought in the second half we executed those things."
In overtime, Boston College scored a golden goal off a cross into the opposite side of the box four minutes into overtime.
"It was another overtime game for us in conference and the ACC is the toughest league in the country," Wheddon said. "We are very close to being where we need to be, but we're not there yet."
Syracuse's season ends with an 8-8-3 record. The Orange tied the ACC regular season champion Notre Dame and perennial powerhouse Florida State earlier in the season. Three of Syracuse's games in the ACC came down to the wire, ending as a one-goal decisions for the opponent. Two of those games went into overtime.
"Today was about playing for our seniors who have been fantastic for our program," Wheddon said.
The Orange lose five seniors to graduation this year in Annette Cappellino, Maddie Iozzi, Rebecca Pongetti, Sierra Shafer and Stephanie Skilton.
