'Cuse welcomes 2016 NCAA Tournament participants Albany and Duke to the Dome as well as ACC rival Virginia
The Syracuse men's lacrosse team will duplicate its entire 2016 slate in 2017, highlighted by seven home dates. 2016 NCAA Tournament participants Albany and Duke and longstanding rival Virginia are set to visit the Carrier Dome this season.
Four-straight home games will kick off the 2017 slate, with the Orange once again opening against Siena for the third year in a row on Feb. 11, before hosting Albany in a rematch of last season's NCAA Tournament first round game at the Carrier Dome on Feb. 18.
'Cuse then takes on Army on Feb. 25 after defeating the Black Knights 9-8 in the Dome last season.
ACC play opens up on March 5, with Syracuse squares off against Virginia in what has consistently been a tight matchup. 'Cuse won last season's game 14-13 to even the all-time series up at 16 wins apiece.
Syracuse will then begin a two-game road swing, first heading to St. Johns on March 11, before returning to Johns Hopkins on March 18.
It's the second-consecutive season that the game will take place at Homewood Field, with the Blue Jays set to return to Syracuse in both 2018 and 2019.
The location change is due to Syracuse University and the Carrier Dome making a commitment to host the first and second round matchups of the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament should Syracuse earn a top-four seed for the second straight season. Alternate dates for lacrosse game to be played in Syracuse were explored, but both schools' schedules could not accommodate the game on another day this season.
"We are pleased to be able to continue this historic rivalry and appreciate Johns Hopkins working with us to ensure the home-and-home series stays intact," said Syracuse University Director of Athletics John Wildhack. "Our goal is to give all of our student-athletes the opportunity to compete in NCAA Championships at home whenever possible. We all appreciate the support of Coach Desko and his staff in arriving at this decision."
Syracuse and Johns Hopkins will work toward shifting the game to a different date in future years to avoid potential facility schedule conflicts with the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament.
After returning from Hopkins, the Orange will host a rematch of last season's ACC Championship thriller on March 25, when Duke visits the Carrier Dome for just the third time. The Blue Devils won the regular season matchup between the two programs last year, but 'Cuse got its revenge by claiming a second-straight ACC Championship in a 14-8 victory last season.
A second set of back-to-back road matchups again await the Orange when 'Cuse takes on Notre Dame in South Bend on April 1 and returning to local rival Hobart on April 5 in the 103rd contest between the Orange and Statesmen for the Kraus-Simmons Trophy. The trophy has been claimed by Syracuse in 27 of the last-29 meetings.
Another in-state rivalry with over 100 matchups comes on April 11, when Cornell visits the Carrier Dome. Syracuse leads the all-time series with the Big Red 64-36-1, with the 102nd game between the programs scheduled for 7 p.m.
Syracuse will close out its regular-season ACC slate at defending NCAA Champion North Carolina at 4 p.m. on April 15, before closing out its home slate on April 22 vs. Binghamton in the Carrier Dome.
Duke will play host to the 2017 ACC Tournament from April 28-30, with the Orange seeking a third-straight conference title in what's widely considered the nation's most difficult league.
After the ACC Tournament, Syracuse will play one final regular season game at Colgate on May 6, before the NCAA Tournament gets underway on May 13 or 14.
The Orange returns three All-Americans from last year's roster, seven players who recorded at least one start and 20 players who saw action in at least 10 games. 'Cuse was also recently slotted at No. 7 in the Inside Lacrosse Face-Off Yearbook Top-20, with six of its 2017 opponents also being represented in the poll.
