After winning 17-of-24 face offs, including 11-straight to start the game in the Orange's triumph over No. 12 Albany, Syracuse's Ben Williams has been named ACC Defensive Player of the Week for the now fourth-ranked Orange (2-0).
The junior midfielder allowed the Orange to get out to an early lead in the contest against, by going perfect in the first quarter and winning three more to start the third, which allowed Syracuse to jump to an early 6-3 lead that it'd never relinquish before Williams even lost his first restart.
The 11-straight faceoff wins were the second-longest streak in his Syracuse career, behind only last year's contest against the Great Danes where he won 15-straight. His perfect first quarter was also the 10th time the Mendota Heights, Minnesota native had been perfect through a period in his 'Cuse career.
Williams also picked up a game-high nine ground balls in the contest.
This is the second-straight week a Syracuse student-athlete earned ACC Player of the Week honors. After the season-opening win over Siena, redshirt senior Dylan Donahue garnered ACC Offensive Player of the Week, while freshman defender Nick Mellen was named ACC Defensive Player of the Week.
The Orange will conclude its three-game home stand to start the year against Army West Point on Sunday at 4 p.m. Tickets are available by visiting Cuse.com/tickets, the Carrier Dome Box Office, or by calling 1-888-DOMETIX.
