Fomer Orange wide receiver to be formally enshrined Aug. 6
SAN FRANCISCO – Former Syracuse wide receiver Marvin Harrison was selected for enshrinement in the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday, Feb. 6.
Harrison joins quarterback Brett Favre, linebacker Kevin Greene, offensive tackle Orlando Pace, quarterback Ken Stabler, owner Eddie DeBartolo, coach Tony Dungy and guard Dick Stanfel in this year's eight-member class elected by the Hall of Fame Board of Selectors. To be elected, a finalist must receive a minimum of 80 percent of the votes cast by the board.
Harrison is the eighth Syracuse Pro Football Hall of Famer, tied with Michigan, Pittsburgh and Alabama for the fourth-most of any school. Only USC (11), Notre Dame (11) and Ohio State (10) have more. Prior to Harrison's election, the Orange's most recent inductee was Floyd Little in 2010.
A star for the Orange from 1992-95 before being drafted by the Indianapolis Colts, Harrison played 13 seasons in Indianapolis and was named to eight Pro Bowls before retiring after the 2008 season. He recorded eight 1,000-yard seasons, including a 1,366-yard performance in 2006 to help the Colts win their first Super Bowl in 36 years.
Â
Harrison's best year was 2002 when he set the NFL single-season record for catches with 143 for 1,722 yards.
Â
A native of Philadelphia, Pa., Harrison finished his pro career with 14,580 yards, which ranks seventh on the NFL's all-time receiving yardage list, and he is one of only two players in league history to amass 14,000 receiving yards for one franchise.
Â
Harrison holds the Syracuse records for career receiving yards (2,728) and most receiving yards in a season with 1,131 as a senior in 1995. He was the primary receiver for SU greats Donovan McNabb and Marvin Graves before becoming Peyton Manning's favorite target with the Colts.
The Pro Football Hall of Fame's Class of 2016 will formally be enshrined in Canton, Ohio on Aug. 6.
