A day after Orange alum John Galloway was tabbed as the MLL Goaltender of the Year, another Orange alum earned a major postseason award from the league, as Joel White was named Warrior co-Defensive Player of the Year with teammate Mike Manley.
White, who was a two-time Tewaaraton Award Finalist and recipient of the Lt. Donald C. MacLaughlin Jr. Award as the nation's most outstanding midfielder, suited up from 2008-11 for the Orange and graduated as the program's all-time leader in ground balls (283), points by a defensive player (28) and goals by a defensive player (18). He is also one-of-25 players in the 100-year history of the program to be a team captain on multiple teams.
A three-time USILA All-American, White and Syracuse teammate John Galloway were crucial components on a Rochester Rattlers defense that allowed a league-best 167 goals in 2016. White appeared in 11 games for the Rattlers in the 2016 season and picked up 65 groundballs to be ranked second on the team. He also caused 13 turnovers and tallied seven points off one goal and six assists. In Week 6, White racked up six groundballs and tallied an assist in the Rochester 18-14 win over the Chesapeake Bayhawks and was named the Warrior Defensive Player of the Week.Â
