Orange At It Again! First Practice of 2016-17
9/29/2016 2:10:00 PM | Men's Basketball
The men's basketball team, riding the wave of a second Final Four appearance in the past four seasons, started official practice on Friday, September 30, in the Carmelo Anthony Basketball Center.
The 4:00 p.m. practice marked the opening of Coach Jim Boeheim's 41st season at his alma mater. As has been the case in all 40 previous campaigns, there is great optimism for this year's edition of the Orange.
Syracuse was 23-14 a year ago and produced a dramatic run to the NCAA semifinal before having its season stopped by North Carolina.Â
Three starters have departed from last year's roster. Graduate students Trevor Cooney and Michael Gbinije completed their eligibility and are now pursuing professional careers, Cooney in Europe and Gbinije as a second-round draft pick of the Detroit Pistons. Standout freshman Malachi Richardson is in training camp with the Sacramento Kings after being selected in the first round of the NBA draft.
The club's returning starters are senior forward Tyler Roberson and redshirt senior center DaJuan Coleman. Both players started all 37 games a season ago. They'll be joined by two transfers who are immediately eligible -- guard John Gillon from Colorado State and swing-man Andrew White III from Nebraska. Both are in their fifth years and have earned their undergraduate degrees, making them eligible for one season with the Orange. Gillon and White III each started with their respective clubs a year ago and White III earned honorable mention All-Big Ten recognition.
Two other players with significant Orange experience are guard Frank Howard and forward Tyler Lydon. The two sophomores figure prominently in Syracuse plans for 2016-17. A redshirt sophomore, 7-2 Paschal Chukwu, is now eligible after transferring from Providence and sitting out one season.
There's an impressive crop of freshmen on hand as well. Guard Tyus Battle and forwards Matthew Moyer and Taurean Thompson have joined the squad.
The Orange play exhibition games with Indiana (Pa.) and Le Moyne on November 1 and 8, respectively. The regular season begins with a Dome encounter on November 11 against Colgate.
