Orange Come Up Short Against No. 12 Virginia

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's soccer team (7-7-2, 2-5-1) succumbed to a dominant Virginia (9-4-3, 3-1-3) offense, 3-1, Thursday night at SU Soccer Stadium. Sophomore Georgia Allen scored the sole goal for the Orange in the 26th minute of play.
"Until the penalty kill call, we felt that we were going to be able to counter them and find another opportunity," said head coach Phil Wheddon. "The penalty kick changed the game but I am exceptionally proud of our group. We know what we have to do and we are going to set about it the right way and make sure that we are prepared for Sunday."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Down 1-0, sophomore Sydney Brackett dribbled the ball deep into Virginia territory before sending a cross pass to the front of the box for a diving Georgia Allen, who headed the ball into the back of the net. Senior keeper Courtney Brosnan made a pair of saves in the final minutes of the first half to keep the score tied at one heading into halftime.
Despite the effort by the Orange, the Cavaliers posted two second half goals, a header in the 59th minute and a penalty kick in the 77th to cap the game, 3-1.
OF NOTE
Allen is the fifth Syracuse player to notch at least two goals this season, joining the ranks of Brackett (five), Kate Donovan (three), Taylor Bennett (two) and Alex Lamontagne (two).
Brosnan continues to move up the ranks for the all-time program record for career saves (331). After her three-save performance against Virginia, the senior has now made 322 saves in her four-year career, good for second in program history.
LOOKING AHEAD
"This team has been extremely good defensively," said Wheddon. "The shots that we have given up are mostly from distance and Courtney is going to save 99 percent of anything that comes from distance. We just need to take more shots and we have to be able to put the ball in the back of the net."
UP NEXT
Syracuse hosts No. 4 Duke for its final home game of the season, Sunday afternoon at SU Soccer Stadium. The Orange will honor their graduating members on Senior Day in addition to holding Pink Day for breast cancer awareness. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra. Admission to all home games is free.
