SEATTLE – Seven-time Pro Bowler Dwight Freeney is back in the NFL.
The 37-year-old defensive end agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks Wednesday, Oct. 25 after working out for the team yesterday. Â
Â
Freeney, who holds multiple Syracuse sack records, is going into his 16th NFL season. He bolsters a Seattle defense that saw defensive end Cliff Avril go down with a neck injury in Week 4. Avril was placed on injured reserve last week.
Â
Freeney spent last season with Atlanta Falcons, appearing in 15 regular-season games and recording three sacks. He started two of Atlanta's playoff games and helped the Falcons reach the Super Bowl. Â
Â
Prior to his stint in Atlanta, Freeney spent 11 seasons (2002-12) with the Indianapolis Colts where he built a reputation as one of the most feared edge rushers in the league. He also played two years (2013-14) for the San Diego Chargers and one season (2015) for the Arizona Cardinals.
Â
Freeney ranks 18th in NFL history, and second among active players behind Julius Peppers, with 122.5 sacks. Freeney has made three career Super Bowl appearances, including two with the Colts. He won a world championship in 2006 when Indianapolis defeated Chicago 29-17 in Super Bowl XLI.
Â
At Syracuse, Freeney was nearly unstoppable. He racked up 34 career sacks from 1998-2001 and set the Orange single-game record, sacking Virginia Tech's Michael Vick 4.5 times in 2000. As a senior in 2001, Freeney led the nation and set the Orange single-season record with 17.5 sacks. He also led the country in forced fumbles (11) and was a finalist for the Lombardi, Nagurski and Bednarik Awards.
Â
The Seahawks are currently 4-2 and sit in second place in the NFC West. Freeney could make his Seattle debut as early as this weekend when the Seahawks host the Houston Texans.
