BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Syracuse women's soccer team (7-8-3, 2-6-2) closed out the regular season with a 0-0 draw at Virginia Tech (7-6-5, 1-5-4) Thursday night at Thompson Field. Senior keeper Courtney Brosnan made 14 saves in goal for the Orange, moving into first for career saves in program history with 344.
"I'm really proud of our team," said head coach Phil Wheddon. "It was a hard-fought, physical contest and I think our players really stepped up to the task. It was a really strong team effort for a 110 minutes and the group showed a lot of fortitude and fight."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Brosnan shined in the final game of the season, making 14 stops in goal against a dominant Virginia Tech offense. The Hokies outshot the Orange 32-7 but Brosnan kept Syracuse in the game with her record-breaking performance.
OF NOTE
Brosnan surpassed Eliza Bennett-Hattan (331) for first place in school history for career saves, Thursday night against the Hokies. The senior finishes her career with 24 career wins and 18 shutouts, good for second and third in program records, respectively. With 102 saves this season, Brosnan finishes in first in the ACC in saves, and ranks third in the Syracuse history for most saves in a season.
"Courtney was fantastic in goal," said Wheddon. "She definitely deserves some recognition from coaches and in the conference as a whole and I hope she gets it."
This is the second time in program history that that the season finale ended in an overtime tie, with the only other occurrence coming in 2002 when the Orange took Cornell to a 0-0 draw to close out the season.
SEASON IN REVIEW
The Orange finish the 2017 season with a 7-8-3 record, including a pair of conference wins over Pittsburgh and Miami. Syracuse took two ranked opponents, No. 21 Connecticut and No. 19 Clemson to double overtime ties this year, as well.
Sophomore Sydney Brackett led 'Cuse in scoring with five goals and an assist on the season, followed closely by freshman Kate Donovan who had three goals of her own.
Syracuse graduates six seniors, Alex Lamontagne, Sheridan Street, Jessica Vigna, Eva Gordon, Alana O'Neill and Brosnan, and one junior, Maddie Pack, this year, a major blow to the stalwart Orange defense.
However, the Orange return a freshman class that played a large role in the team's success this season. Two freshmen, midfielder Mackenzie Vlachos and defender Shannon Aviza, started all 18 games for the Orange in 2017.
