SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. rv/13 Akron scored the game's only goal in the 35th minute to record a 1-0 victory against No. rv/-- Syracuse on Tuesday, Oct. 3 at the SU Soccer Stadium.
Â
"Overall, I'm disappointed for our guys because they worked extremely hard tonight," said Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre. "This one hurts, but we got better tonight."
Â
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Syracuse (5-5-2) had its best scoring chance in the first 20 seconds of the game after senior Mamadou Balde forced a turnover just past midfield. He brought the ball into the Orange offensive end and passed it to freshman Tajon Buchanan on the left side of the box. Buchanan got off a shot but it went off the post to keep Syracuse off the scoreboard.
Â
The Zips (6-2-1) tallied the game-winner in the 35th minute. Joe Korb passed the ball to Morgan Hackworth, who one-timed it to Ezana Kahsay, who was making a run at the goal. He put his shot in the back of the net to give Akron the 1-0 lead.
Â
The Orange were the more dangerous team at the start of the second half as they recorded two shots on goal and a corner kick in the first six minutes of action. Goalkeeper Hendrik Hilpert made three second-half saves to keep Syracuse within one, but it couldn't take advantage of its scoring chances as it was shutout for just the second time this season.
Â
OF NOTE
Ten of Syracuse's 12 matches this season have been decided by one goal or less. Last season, 12 of the Orange's 20 matches either ended in a tie or were one-goal games.
