
Franklin, Carey Named Scholar-Athletes Of The Week

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Zaire Franklin of the football team and Elaine Carey of the field hockey team are this week's Syracuse Scholar-Athletes of the Week.
Franklin and the football team are home again this week to host defending national champion Clemson on Friday, Oct. 13. Game time is 7 p.m. on ESPN. Tickets to watch the Orange and Tigers start at $45 and are available online (Cuse.com/tickets), by phone (888-DOME-TIX) and at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B).
Carey and the field hockey team return home to face No. 3 Virginia and Drexel on Saturday, Oct. 14 and Sunday, Oct 15, respectively. Both games start at 1 p.m. and will be broadcasted on ACC Network Extra.
A senior from Philadelphia, Pa., Franklin is pursuing a degree in finance and marketing. He is actively involved in the Syracuse University chapter of Uplifting Athletes and is a past member of the University's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. He was an ACC Academic Honor Roll member for the 2014-15 season and has qualified for the SU Athletic Director's Honor Roll in three different semesters.
Franklin ranks second on the team with 40 tackles this season. He was named to the All-ACC Third Team by the media and earned All-ACC Honorable Mention recognition from the league's head coaches in the 2016 slate. He is the team's active leader in starts (33), tackles (266), tackles for loss (28.0), sacks (7.0) and forced fumbles (4).
A graduate student from Galway, Ireland, Carey is pursuing a degree in nutrition science. She was a member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll for the 2016-17 season and qualified for the SU Athletic Director's Honor Roll in both of her completed semesters at Syracuse.
Carey leads the Orange in scoring this season with 17 points on six goals and five assists and has started in all 13 games. Carey has two game-winning goals on the year in victories over Ohio and Boston College. In 2016, she led the team with nine assists and ranked fourth with seven goals for a total of 23 points, the third highest mark on the team.
