11/10/2017 11:01:00 PM | Volleyball
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Anastasiya Gorelina tied for a match-high 17 kills and added nine digs as the Syracuse women's volleyball team lost 3-1 (17-25, 19-25, 30-28, 24-26) at Florida State Friday night in an ACC matchup. The Seminoles improve to 13-10 and 7-8 in conference play. The Orange drops to 17-11 and 9-6.
Jalissa Trotter posted a match-high 46 assists with 10 digs for 'Cuse. Santita Ebangwese, Amber Witherspoon and Christina Oyawale each posted double-digits in kills with 11, 11 and 10, respectively. Belle Sand led all competitors with 20 digs.
Natasha Calkins led the FSU with 17 kills. Brianne Burkhardt had a team-high 38 assists and Cecilie Woie finished with 17 digs.
How It Was Decided
With set one all square at 15, Florida State closed on a 10-2 run to win 25-17.
Another 10-2 run in the second set pushed the Seminoles ahead 20-12. FSU was able to hold off a late Orange push and take the set 25-19.
The Orange faced set point on four different occasions in the third. Two kills from Ebangwese and a kill from Witherspoon fought off the first three set points and then three straight Florida State errors led to a 30-28 'Cuse triumph.
Syracuse jumped out to a 20-16 lead in the fourth set, but Florida State surged back and tied the game at 23. A Gorelina kill inched the Orange closer to claiming the set, but the Seminoles scored the final three points of the match and won 26-24.
Coach's Thoughts
"Florida State came out better than we did in the first two sets," said associate head coach Erin Little. "We had players step up for us in the third set and compete. Amber (Witherspoon) gave us good offensive numbers, Santita (Ebangwese) stepped up big time and Christina (Oyawale) gave us several key blocks in the match."
What's Next?
The Orange finishes the regular season road schedule at Miami on Sunday, Nov. 12 at 12 p.m. The match will be broadcasted on ACC Network Extra.
