Orange duo advances to CoSIDA Academic All-America ballot
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse junior quarterback Eric Dungey and junior snapper Matt Keller were named to the 2017 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District I Football Team on Thursday, Nov. 16.
Â
To be eligible, student-athletes must be a starter or key reserve, achieve sophomore standing at their current school, maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.3 and be nominated by his or her sports information director.
Â
It's the second straight year Dungey has earned the honor, and Keller's first Academic All-District citation.
Â
Dungey has started nine games for the Orange this season and accounted for 23 touchdowns (14 passing, 9 rushing). He is 225-of-377 for 2,495 yards through the air, and has rushed 143 times for a team-best 595 yards. The third-year signal-caller ranks sixth in the nation in both completions per game (25.0) and total offense (343.3). Dungey's 2,495 yards passing and 3,090 yards of offense rank second on the school record lists for players in their junior season.
Â
Off the field, Dungey is a finance major in Syracuse's Martin J. Whitman School of Management.
Â
Keller has played in 34 career games and has served as the team's snapper for both punts and placement kicks the past two seasons. In 2017, he has initiated an Orange punting operation that tops the ACC and ranks 14th nationally in net average (41.3). Keller also works closely with kicker Cole Murphy, who earlier this month was named a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award and leads the conference in kicking points (88).
Â
An accounting major in the Whitman School, Keller has been named to the Syracuse Athletic Director's Honor Roll (min. 3.0 GPA) every semester he's been on campus.
Â
By virtue of their placement on the all-district team, Dungey and Keller advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team ballot, with first-, second- and third-team honorees to be announced in December.
