
Mahoney, Malone Named Scholar-Athletes of the Week

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Zack Mahoney of the football team and Shannon Malone of the women's cross country team are this week's Syracuse Scholar-Athletes of the Week.
A senior from LaGrange Park, Ill., Mahoney earned his bachelor's degree in communication and rhetorical studies and is now pursuing a graduate degree in public relations. Mahoney is president of the Syracuse University chapter of Uplifting Athletes and is a current member of the Syracuse Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). He is a 2017 All-State AFCA Good Works Team Nominee and is a member of the Lambda Pi Eta Honor Society. Mahoney is a three-time member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll and has qualified for the SU Athletic Director's Honor Roll twice.
In 2017, Mahoney has appeared in five games. The quarterback has completed 8-of-15 passes for 38 yards. After one season of junior-college ball, Mahoney joined Syracuse as a walk-on in January 2015 and was awarded a scholarship during the 2016 preseason camp. In the 2016 season, Mahoney broke Jim Brown's school record for single-game touchdown responsibility with seven touchdowns at Pittsburgh.
A junior from Pittsburgh, Pa., Malone is majoring in political science in the College of Arts and Sciences. Malone is a four-time ACC Academic Honor Roll member and has qualified for the SU Athletic Director's Honor Roll four times.
Malone finished seventh at the ACC Cross Country Championships on Oct. 27, finishing the 6K course in 20:11.7. She also posted a 27th place finish at the Coast-To-Coast Battle in Beantown and a 46th place finish at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational. As a sophomore, Malone placed 67th in both the NCAA Northeast Region Cross Country Championships and in the ACC Championships.
