Brissett Pushes Orange Past Bulls

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse (10-1) went on a 14-6 run over the final 3:01 to pull away from Buffalo (7-4) in an 81-74 victory Tuesday night in the Carrier Dome. The game featured ten lead changes, with eight coming in the final 8:59 of regulation.
Four different Syracuse players finished in double-figures. Freshman Oshae Brissett led the way with 25 points and eight rebounds. Junior Frank Howard totaled 18 points, sophomore Tyus Battle added 13 points and redshirt freshman Matthew Moyer finished just shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds.
How it was Decided
A Buffalo layup gave the Bulls a 68-67 lead with 3:16 to play. Howard hit a 3-pointer and a layup along with three Syracuse free throws to give to Orange a 75-68 lead with 48 seconds to play. Brissett went 6-of-6 from the charity stripe down the stretch to cement a seven-point win.
Game Summary
An 8-2 run gave the Orange an early 19-10 lead. Battle knocked down a 3-pointer, Brissett converted a 3-point play and Moyer made a layup. The Bulls answered with back-to-back treys to pull within three.
A Howard Washington layup and back-to-back buckets from Moyer pushed the Orange lead to seven with 5:52 remaining in the first half. Buffalo hit another 3-pointer and Syracuse extended its lead to 11 with a Marek Dolezaj layup, a 3-point field goal from Howard and two Brissett free throws. The Orange entered the break with a 36-27 lead.
A Moyer jumper and two more free throws from Brissett gave Syracuse a 13-point lead, its largest of the game, early in the second half. The Bulls countered with a 22-8 run over 7:40 time span to take a 53-52 lead.
Four straight Orange free throws gave Syracuse a 59-56 lead with 7:28 to play. Buffalo came right back with a layup and two free throws to regain a one point advantage.
Another Brissett 3-point play along with a Dolezaj layup gave the Orange a 67-62 lead with 4:38 to play. The Bulls used three straight buckets to regain the lead.
Numbers of Note
Brissett finished the game 16-of-16 from the free throw line and established a school mark for free throw percentage (most made) in the Carrier Dome. The all-time Syracuse record for free throw percentage (most made) was established by Greg Kohls, who went 17-of-17 against Fordham in the 1971-72 season.
Syracuse shot 50.0 percent (26-of-52) from the field and 82.8 percent (24-of-29) from the free throw line. The Orange held Buffalo to 37.7 percent (26-69) shooting from the field on the night. Syracuse also held an 8-3 advantage in blocks.
Nick Perkins led the Bulls with 18 points and seven rebounds. Wes Clark added 15 points and CJ Massinburg finished with 14 points and eight boards.
