Graduate student tallies record-breaking night
RALEIGH, N.C. – Graduate transfer John Gillon tallied a career-high 43 points, shooting 9-of-10 from 3-point range and 14-of-14 at the free throw line, as Syracuse (14-9, 6-4 ACC) defeated NC State (14-9, 3-7 ACC), 100-93, on the road in overtime at PNC Arena.
Gillon's performance ties the most points scored by an Orange player since Syracuse assistant coach Gerry McNamara had 43 on March 18, 2004 against BYU in the NCAA tournament and is tied for the fourth-highest single-game total in program history.
It is also the highest scoring total in the ACC since Boston College's Tyrese Rice netted 46 against North Carolina on March 1, 2008.
Gillon's 9-of-10 performance behind the arc tied a program mark, while he was 10-of-13 shooting overall and dished out nine assists. The effort from the guard marks a new PNC Arena record for 3-pointers made in a single game and a venue record for points in a single game.
Gillon's 3-point shooting percentage broke an ACC record set just 72 hours earlier by Boston College's Jordan Chatman, who converted 9-11 against Virginia Tech. The 90 percent shooting effort from behind the arc set an ACC single-game record for players shooting nine-or-more 3-pointers in a game.
The graduate student led a 17-2 comeback run for the Orange after facing a 16-point, 75-59, deficit. Gillon tallied four triple baskets in the run to account for 12-of-17 points to bring the Orange within one, 77-76, with 5:12 left on the clock.
After free throws from Gillon tied the game, 84-84, NC State went ahead by three thanks to a 3-point basket from Maverick Rowan. Rowan went on to convert 8-of-18 3-pointers on the night.
With 1.1 on the clock, Gillon sank his ninth triple of the game under the pressure of two defenders to tie it up, 87-87, and force overtime.
Fellow graduate transfer Andrew White III took over in overtime, tallying nine of the 13 points for the Orange to seal the game, 100-93. Gillon was responsible for the other four points in the extra frame thanks to a solid performance from the charity stripe, as the Orange didn't miss a shot in the overtime period. He has converted 27-of-28 free throws over the last two games.
White III tallied double-digit scoring numbers for the 22nd game this season, as the guard finished the night with a season-high 28.
Tyler Lydon joined the graduate pair in double-digits with 15 points, while adding a team-leading seven rebounds.
The Orange return to the Carrier Dome on Saturday, February 4 to host No. 9/11 Virginia. Tipoff is set for Noon. Tickets can purchased online, by phone at 888-DOME-TIX or in person at Gate B at the Carrier Dome.
