The Syracuse University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is partnering with Project Life Movement to increase the bone marrow and tissue donor registry during the Orange men's basketball game on February 4, 2017 at the Carrier Dome. Fans are encouraged to visit the Project Life booth in the Carrier Dome backcourt prior to the basketball game to get registered through a simple cheek swab. The process identifies potential matches and life-saving marrow donors.
Â
Started by the Syracuse SAAC in 2016 with a bone marrow drive, the initiative is a part of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Student-Athlete Advisory Committee's relationship with Project Life Movement (PLM). As part of the 2016-17 ACC SAAC goals, many ACC institutions held and are planning to host drives on their campuses in order to create a conference wide cancer awareness initiative.
Â
"Project Life Movement is committed to increasing and diversifying the pool of potential marrow donors by recruiting and registering college students as volunteers – and with only a simple cheek swab," said David Lindsay, Founder/Executive Director of Project Life Movement.Â
Â
Project Life is a national movement to increase the potential pool of bone marrow and tissue donors by testing and registering college students with a simple cheek swab. Bone marrow treatments are the only hope for many people diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma, sickle cell anemia and other blood cancers and diseases, but 60 percent of those in need of a life-giving donation currently can't find a donor match.Â
