Syracuse University alumnus Bob Arkeilpane is returning to his roots. The 1981 Syracuse graduate and four-year Orange football letterwinner is Syracuse's new executive director for athletics development. A veteran athletics administrator with vast fundraising experience, Arkeilpane was the director of athletics at the University at Buffalo for five years and served as the deputy director of athletics at the University of Cincinnati for nine years.
At Syracuse, Arkeilpane will be responsible for the creation and implementation of all athletics fundraising efforts for the 20 men's and women's sports programs, including athletic facilities, and for the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of a portfolio of major prospects and donors. He will also work closely with the Athletics Department volunteer leadership boards. Arkeilpane will have a dual reporting role to the Department of Athletics and the Office of Advancement and External Affairs.
Arkeilpane began his three decades of Division I intercollegiate athletics experience as a student-athlete at Syracuse University. He played defensive back for the Orange and head coach Frank Maloney from 1977 through 1980, including as a member of the 1979 Independence Bowl team that beat McNeese State. He then moved to Ohio University where he earned his master's degree in sport administration and was a graduate assistant football coach.
As the director of athletics at the University at Buffalo from 1998 through 2003, Arkeilpane had responsibility for all intercollegiate athletic, recreational and intramural athletics programs, including 17 sports teams that competed in the Mid-American Conference (MAC). Football joined the conference in the fall of 1999 and, under Arkeilpane's leadership, UB added three new sports, including women's softball and crew, and baseball. Arkeilpane's accomplishments also included successfully guiding UB through the Division I-A reclassification process, positioning the Bulls to comply successfully with all aspects of Title IX, improving attendance at football and basketball games and achieving a balanced budget for five consecutive years. Prior to his appointment to lead the athletics program, he was an associate director of athletics for development and external relations for nearly three years.
At Cincinnati, Arkeilpane served as associate vice president for development/campaign planning for the UC Foundation, the private sector fund-raising entity for the University of Cincinnati and its campuses, colleges, departments and units, from 2003 through 2005. Arkeilpane previously had worked for the UC Foundation as college director of development and alumni affairs from 1987-91. He transitioned to the role of deputy director of athletics in 2005. Arkeilpane was responsible for oversight of the day-to-day operations of the athletics department. He held direct sport oversight of the football, men's basketball, and baseball programs, as well as managing the sports medicine and athletics business offices.
Prior to his nine-year tenure at Buffalo, Arkeilpane was an assistant athletics director at Miami (OH) University from 1993-95. His career in administration started in Buffalo when he worked as director of annual giving from 1983-85. Arkeilpane then moved on to an assistant athletics director for development position at Cal State-Fullerton until 1987. He has also served as a development officer at Cincinnati and as assistant athletics director for development at Miami University.
A native of Amherst, N.Y., and a standout high school football player at Sweet Home High School, he was a Syracuse teammate of future NFL stars Art Monk, Joe Morris and Gary Anderson.
