2017 Schedule
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse men's soccer team will face one of its toughest schedules in school history in 2017. Head coach Ian McIntyre announced the schedule, which features 10 matches, including eight during the regular season, against teams that competed in the 2016 NCAA Tournament, on Monday, May 15. Eight teams on the 2017 slate have combined for a total of 26 NCAA Championships.
Â
"This is unquestionably the toughest schedule that we have put together as a coaching staff," McIntyre said. "Our Syracuse fans will enjoy welcoming some fantastic teams to campus this fall and I know that we will have some special nights at the SU Soccer Stadium. A very difficult slate of non-conference games will prepare us for an exciting, unforgiving ACC schedule. We have a new group who will embrace the challenge of competing in such terrific college soccer matches. We will certainly learn a great deal about our young team through these games as we look to continue to evolve and grow as a program."
Â
The Orange will play three exhibition matches to prepare for the 2017 campaign. Syracuse will host Hartwick (Aug. 13) and Villanova (Aug. 16) before traveling to College Park, Md. to take on the Terrapins (Aug. 19). Maryland was the top seed in last year's national tournament.
Â
Syracuse opens the season with a pair of road matches at St. Louis on Friday, Aug. 25 and SIU Edwardsville, which advanced to the third round of the 2016 NCAA Tournament, on Aug. 27. The Orange will host Princeton and Northwestern in the Central New York Classic at the SU Soccer Stadium. Syracuse takes on the Tigers on Sept. 1 before facing the Wildcats on Sept. 3.
Â
The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) opener is set for Friday, Sept. 8 at Virginia. Syracuse returns home for four consecutive home matches against Oregon State (Sept. 12), Louisville (Sept. 15), Cornell (Sept. 19) and Duke (Sept. 22). The Cardinals were the No. 4 seed in last year's national tournament and advanced to the Elite 8.
Â
The Orange go back on the road to face Colgate (Sept. 25) and Pittsburgh (Sept. 29) before returning home to face Akron (Oct. 3) and North Carolina State (Oct. 6). Syracuse will play at Boston College on Oct. 13 and at Ohio State on Oct. 18.
Â
The final two matches of the regular season feature two of the top teams in the nation. The Orange host Clemson in their final regular-season home match on Oct. 21. The Tigers were the ACC Tournament runner up last season and advanced to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals. Syracuse goes on the road for the final regular-season match at Wake Forest on Oct. 27. The Demon Deacons advanced to the national championship game last season and are the defending ACC Champions.
Â
Syracuse posted a 12-4-4 record last season and earned the No. 8 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Orange earned a first-round bye and defeated Dartmouth to advance to the third round for the third consecutive year.
